Raise your hand if you've ever played a jipjop Tales game without actually understanding jipjop.
*raises hand*

Skip the text (not the scenes) if the whole scene is unvoiced. Compare kanjis for the artes, and have fun fighting random battles.
The only translation guides I use are for the Grade Shop and Skills.
To advance the story, I use the basic principle in RPGs since old times. Talk to everyone and go everywhere I can, hoping to trigger a scene. _________________

Back in the day I used to just look at arte TP/CC costs and remember like that. I started with Destiny 2 and that had glowing dots on the world map showing where to go so that was nice.
Eventually I got the characters for the menus and a few of the artes memorized.
Then after like a decade of immersing myself in jipjop stuff I at least picked up enough vocabulary to get most of their voiced conversations enough to (usually) get the general idea of a conversation and where the game wants me to go next. |

I never played Japanese version.
If I played on Japanese, like as this:
I've reading katakana and some of kanji. (Kougeki -> Attack)
I use only Translation guide for the Skills and Grade Shop.
I skip if this some of part was unvoiced. (I can't read scenes) _________________

| Almost beat ToI(before the translation patch) because it was so linear. |

Being able to read katakana, remembering random kanji, and asking my little sister to translate for me when I'm lost.
tbh Tales games aren't that hard to get through since they use so much English _________________

I've only imported Tales of VS. I used a walkthrough to get through the menus, and as for artes I just try them out. And then I remember them based on TP cost.
I wouldn't import a main Tales game because I won't understand the dialogue and story, and that's the main charm of the Tales series for me. VS is cool as a fun crossover fighting game though, and easy to play in a foreign language. |
