Never mind the Ear of Luigi, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Bravely So Gay, Link to the Past 2, etc., the biggest news out of the Nintendo Direct is EarthBound is coming to Virtual Console this year for North American and Europe. Is it only for Wii U? The chance to buy EarthBound again is fantastic. At least it means they've gotten over the whole copyright scare thing. MOTHER 3, please.

I actually own the GBA versions of all the Mother games, but it'll be really nice to have a version of Earthbound in English to play. I would buy it either way to show my support, but yeah, this is great.

You can have my Earthbound cart when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands.

And now you don't even need it! Awesome.

I own EB on SNES and GBA.

It's nice for people that don't, but I personally don't care unless it goes to 3DS or something.

I'm sure this forum is happy about it, though personally I don't curr about Earthbound, so I wouldn't really call a virtual console release the biggest news out of Nintendo Direct. Though it is nice that it'll finally be available for people to purchase once again.

But you have to support the cause. As much as I like the scratch and sniff, it's been eighteen years since the last legit EarthBound release over here. If they released a new physical version, I'd buy three.

At least a couple of us are buying it. This is also the first time Europe is getting EarthBound, you better send Nintendo your euros.

I'll be getting it.

I've been meaning to play them one way or another, but I can pay Nintendo for it this way, so I will.

Question though. I hear people talk a lot about Earthbound and Mother 3. Why does no one mention Mother 1? Was it bad?

The first Mother is not a bad game, its just not a particularly good one, either. You have to level grind several times throughout the game, and the random encounter rate is pretty high. The GBA port fixes that by giving you a ring you can equip to get double XP and money.

It's really old and Itoi didn't get a feel for the amazing dialogue he writes in EB and Mother 3 yet. It's pretty light on story and dialogue in general too so there's not much to talk about. though IMO it has the best soundtrack on the NES.

Also it wasn't the GBA port that added the easy ring, but the translation patch, which made the game a lot more tolerable and is how I beat it

Oh, that sounds awful. I'll be grateful for that patch when I get around to it
