That's the only thing I agree with there.
Refill and Genius would have just....NOT worked in English. I remember when I found out that those were their real names I was like "wtf kind of names are those" I think it would have been detrimental to the localization. _________________

Refill and Genius are both idiotic and racked with Engrish. The English names still carry the connotations of the Japanese names as well (Raine invokes a soothing rain, Genis is self-explanatory)
Mitos and Mithos are literally one letter off and you're a moron for thinking this is a bad or unnecessary change
Dyke has vulgar connotations in English due to it being slur for a lesbian
plus Dirk is manlier
and in my opinion, a JRPG that makes almost exclusive use of real world names should be bound by the laws of reality associated with those name
going "YEAH WELL FANTASY" as an excuse for exerting your own logic is an idiot's argument _________________

idrgaf about your opinion, Ruin.
But I do agree that Refill and Genius are stupid Engrish names, as well as the change from Dyke to Dirk being highly appropriate for the intended audience. _________________

Are you serious there, dood? There is no disrespect from changing names to suit another audience, that's what localization means. No one is that gotdanged thin-skinned.
And naming rules or not, it doesn't change that Refill and Genius are frickin' weird names. Naming your healer "Refill" because she refills your health is the kind of terrible pun you'd expect someone to say and follow up with a "just-kidding" chortle. And do you seriously expect a guy with the name "Dyke" to blow over well with the connotations of that word here? |

Well, Dragon Ball Z had a guy named Mr. Satan.
I don't see an angry mob with pitchforks and torches outside of Funimation's office.
That's like saying we can't call someone Dick cause its inappropriate, even if its actually his name.
That's like saying someone named Andrew Steven Smith can't write his initials, cause that would spell A. S. S.

My, how DARE William Dyke have the name Dyke.
He should change his name to Mr. Dirk to avoid offending people. Oh, he's American too, look at that.

Anyway, I can' wait for Rowen's video to be released. I just want to hear some old dude voice. |
I'd understand if we were dealing with made-up names, but we're not. Milla, Rowen, Alvin, Elise, and Leia are all real names. Xillia even uses real names for its locations. _________________ Icon via iconography. |

Not really true. Even if it's a fantasy world, the audience is going to view the names through their own cultural lense whether you like it or not. There are all sorts of naming advice out there for writers and it's true that you don't have to follow anyone's advice, but you still risk alienating your audience. The translators are just trying to make names that would sound better in English (for Raine and Genis, etc anyway)
I'm personally used to saying Milluh but s'not a big deal to me :P it's just her voice. Ohh _________________ Mike from Helios 2921-9590-9278

Who happened to be renamed "Hercule" for the dub. Your point?
And "Dyke" is not a typical first name, and Dirk is a fictional character. To give him the name of "Dyke" is a conscious effort to give him a weird name that would be taken weirdly. Hardly comparable to a real man with Dyke in his name, or a name like Dick which is a commonplace name that is also short for Richard.

I wasn't really referring to Xillia with that comment.
But I don't think it really matters anyway. It's not like Milla being called "mee-la" and spelled "Milla" destroys the integrity of the game, especially when that's how people technically should have been pronouncing it prior to localization because that's how it's said. /shrug but that's just my opinion. _________________

Cartoon Network version only. On the DVD it's back to Mr. Satan. You'd notice that if you actually watched the video I linked to.
The TV version is irrelevant here as we are comparing two products sold in stores, the DVD version of DBZ and the retail game TOS.

I wouldn't call it a slap in anyone's face, I trust a company...to work together with itself? xD I'm pretty sure everyone understands.
In terms of the location names, I like the vague references that have to be researched and act as trivia better anyways, rather than names that are literally exactly what they are referencing xD
I really liked the videos, Milla's voice is growing on me, and I think she'll be fine in scenes. I AM SO EXCITED, I really want this to be a July release that'd be perfect >_< or June either way ahhhhhh. I'm glad ToHR came out before so that at least I'm not totally just hyping this for the next few months, I have something to pass those moments. _________________
