What do you think of them? What are the good ones out there? Bad ones? What ones have you used? Which patches in progress are you following? Have you ever participated in making one? Do you want to?
Discuss. I've always liked fan patches, but I became especially enamored with them as of late. _________________ Gaming in 2013:

I think the Innocence Patch is phenomenal and I am eagerly awaiting those of Rebirth and Hearts.
I'm kind of indifferent about Tales of Innocence, the game, but the patch is really good. I never once had the feeling I was playing a translated game.
I'm not following any others.
EDIT: I heard Dejap's Phantasia is pretty funny, but I'm not sure I want to play through that game again. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, and slivijizzisious

DeJap's patch made Phantasia 100x more bearable. _________________ Icon via iconography. |

Yep.
Enjoyable, even.
Also MOTHER3's translation patch is pretty much the best of the best. It kept the quirky nature of the series perfectly, was very well written and error free, and had so much love put into it. It even added an unlockable extra difficulty. _________________

I am mainly waiting for:
Super Robot Wars Alpha
Shin Megami Tensei: if...
Tales of Destiny
But yeah, they are pretty cool. I've played a lot of really good games because of fan translations. |

I love fan patches and romhacking in general I'm also a former translator of a defunct braziliam group.
Thanks to tranlation patches I could play Live-A-Live, Final Fantasy V, Clock Tower, Emeral Dragon, Metal Max Retuns, Super Robot Wars J, P2 Innocent Sin and a hell lot more of awesome games. _________________

I gotta give mad props to all those fan translators that have introduced me to a whole bunch of SFC games I have enjoyed like:
Live A Live
Eternal Filena
Der Langrisser (even the ****** translation!)
Treasure of the Rudras
Mystic Ark
and a bunch others |

The Breath of Fire II retranslation is an excellent and sorely needed patch. It transforms the game from being good but a little confusing and unclear to being one of the best SNES RPGs. _________________

My stance toward fanpatches:
"Beggars can't be choosers."
That being said, I haven't played a patched game that I thought had a horrible translation, though the only games I HAVE played are Tales of Innocence and Fire Emblem 12. Tempted to go for dat Mother 3. _________________

MOTHER 3 is fantastic. Both the original game and the patch to match it. Go for it. _________________

Yes to all these! Mystic Ark in particular. For awhile I was worried it would never be done. :/
Oh and I can't forget Mother 3. Brilliance at its finest. _________________

Too bad it's the **** easy mode everything got botched edition. But seriously the SNES version of that game is universally considered the worst existing version. On the other hand it's nice that I'm not the only one who played it and DID enjoy something from it.

An absolutely beautiful game if I ever played one. Of all the RPGs that got fan translations, I would actively recommend Mystic Ark above everything else.
Aside from that, the obligatory Live-A-Live mention because that's an awesome game that doubles as a gigantic homage to various films and television.
Clock Tower is probably what I would consider one of the defining titles of the survival horror genre (double the fun if you're a Dario Argento fan, because the devs sure as hell were).
Treasure Hunter G was a surprisingly good experience for me. The plot was absolutely terrible, but the cast was fairly solid, if not a bit quirky, and the combat system was fun. _________________

Mother 3's translation is probably my favorite of any game translation ever, both commercial and fanmade. When a translator like Tomato (who is professional game translator), gets to make a translation without any deadlines, the quality is just incredible.
I really need to finish that game one of these days. I'm at Chapter 8. |
