As some of you may or may not recall, I've been working on a complete tech guide detailing both player and monster artes.
I am currently 37% of the way through and I have hit a significant issue.
Currently I am defining techs as Base (eg. Tiger Blade), Extension (eg. Twin Tiger Blade), Altered (eg. Lightning Tiger), Fusion (eg. Tiger Tempest or Pow Blade), Mystic (eg. Falcon's Crest) and Special (eg. Guardian). Mystic is then sub-divided into the other types.
Unfortunately, this system falls apart when subjected to spells as (for example) Aqua Edge is no more related to Spread than to Blessed Drops or any other water spell but still follows on from it in terms of learning moves.
Please suggest a solution. _________________ The ember is dust before the wind... |

Hmmm...
Maybe I'm missing something, but perhaps you can make two "master categories" for your techs list: Instant and Cast.
Therefore, you can place all physical techs that instantly come out (like Demon Fangs and Lightning Blades) in the Instant section (and keep your Base, Extension, Altered, etc. grouping within that master category), while making an entirely different set of grouping criteria for the Cast section (moves that need a charge up to execute, like Fireball, First Aid, or any other spell). _________________

In that case I might as well list them as "Physical" and "Magical" as they appear to be classed in game. Unless I'm mistaken, this has the odd property of separating Undine's Aqua Edge from Genis' but is otherwise a good solution.
EDIT: Once again, I've been an idiot. Turns out I had this Physical/Magical setup already, just forgot because I'd been away from my guide writing so long. Still, the suggestion of separate arte types for spells and techs is one I hadn't though of and one that makes a lot of sense. _________________ The ember is dust before the wind... |
