Talesforum,
I'm considering purchasing a PS2. I know I'm a little late to the party, but since the PS2 Slim is only $99 most places now, I figure now I can bite. Plus, I'm gonna be getting that $20 Amazon gift card, so I'll be essentially able to buy one for $79 from Amazon and that sounds like a p good deal tbh.
I'm not looking to have a huge game library either. Actually, a lot of the reason I want to buy a PS2 is because of its PSX backward compatibility, because I've always desired to play Kingdom Hearts and a couple other games I was never able to get my hands on due to lack of Playstation and I feel like I'm missing out.
So, I want to hear some input from my friendly neighborhood weirdos. Do you have a PS2 Slim? What are your favorite features? Is it durable? Any problems like Xbox's RRoD? Any reason I shouldn't actually buy one (inb4 Abicion saying because it's a Sony product)? This would be the first non-Nintendo gaming system I'll ever own (fanboy alert!) so any input would be good. kkthx all. |

Whats your TV like? If its an HDTV, you might not like the picture quality. Its ugly. If you have an older CRT type TV, then yes, buy it now. _________________

I got a Slim PS2 a year ago after my fat died on me.
Hasn't really let me down, except for the fact that SaGa Frontier 2 plays like **** on it, but that might just be my copy (as I haven't bothered to check otherwise). Every other game I've got (PSX or otherwise) runs great, though, even PSX games I thought were too scratched to run correctly.
There's honestly no reason to not have a PS2 if you like video games. _________________

Yes, it's a 32" Samsung LCD... 480p I believe. So, that kinda worries me..
@Cloud: Good info, thanks. |

Same as mine, but mine is 720p. Yeah, I'd try and get a cheap TV somehow. On my TV, it doesn't even fit the entire screen. It plays in a box, with borders all around it. Even my TV stretch and zoom modes can't get rid of it. Also, jaggies are much more apparent on larger sets. It doesn't bother some people, but it does me. _________________

Might be just your copy, Cloud, mine works just fine.
In any case, due to modern PS3s not being backwards compatible with 2 games, I'd highly recommend getting a PS2 if you want to play those games. _________________

It's not a PS3.
That's a good enough reason to buy any console. As long as it's not a PS3. _________________ SOON.

| @RPGCrazied: Isn't there some sort of stipulation with the way a 480p and a 720p will render video games differently? I'm not terribly knowlegable about that subject... |

| Get Component cables for your PS2. Many PS2 games support 480p. Heck, GT4 supports freaking 1080i. |

Yeah, I play PS2 games on my LCD in my bedroom with component cables all the time, and they look fine. _________________

It's cheap and has a fair few games that are really worth it. Plus the games are old enough to cost almost nothing but not too old that places don't stock them. _________________ The ember is dust before the wind... |

I can't even find PS2 games that aren't sports titles or shovelware. My local Walmart recently had a $1 sale on basically all PS2 games along with a good number of current-gen games, including stuff from 2010. _________________

Well that's you. I spent £20 on decent games all at under a fiver each and have been finding various gems for £2 here and there ever since.
The situation may be different in America but over here you can find all sorts of PS2 games. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for gamecube stuff. _________________ The ember is dust before the wind... |

My 1080p HDTV gives me jaggies with some PS2 games, but not all of them. _________________
