Now I know I'm missing something, but why is Touhou so popular? There's gotta be more to it than bullet hell, but I just don't get it. _________________

I don't get it either. I guess there's a bunch of lore behind all of it like any MMORPG or fantasy series might have, but I've got no clue where it might come from as shoot-'em-up dialogue is some of the most trite stuff in existence.
I'm just excited for Anime Tenchou. I'm still annoyed that I could never find the original OVA for it, or the live action movie. But hey. New OVA and a crossover OVA with Touhou. _________________

Since Cloud mentioned Seki singing, here's the original Anime Tenchou opening:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dm83UPreMbE
And in case anybody forgot, Anime Tenchou was in multiple episodes of Lucky Star for some reason. Here's a promo Seki did for the OVA:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CL2VAib-xE (just found it for the first time myself.)
The live action thing I mentioned before was apparently done by the seiyuu themselves, so Seki cosplaying as Anime Tenchou wasn't really a new concept for the trailer. =P

It's addicting. seriously go play it. | He wasn't complaining about gameplay as that's self-explanatory, but all the OTHER stuff in the fandom. _________________

I stick to a general reason. Touhou is popular because of the character diversity and its elements are extraordinarily easy to manipuate.
Vagueness of the canonical elements make room for people to come up with their own interpretation of a character, setting or event, while still complimenting the base personality (Although, many people take this too far and utterly destroy all canonical elements, but that's just fandom in general being retarded). There's no huge plot or wholly-explained story or too much depth to any of the characters (Note that character aspects and each game's story are explained mostly in the afterwords and other written works, and there are many more stories and characterizations behind the scenes. Read up, folks); it's just very easy to work with since it offers a gigantic palette.
ZUN is a fairly good musician, and most of his music is very, very easy to play around with and arrange. This along with everything else (being a doujin game itself, there is no actual licensing besides an honor/respect system that works marvelously) pretty much beckons doujin artists, music and artwork alike to create Touhou doujin works. The massive amount of doujin works gets recognizes alongside the games themselves, and it really just spirals in a giant cycle of recognition. _________________

Because it has lolis. Lots of lolis. Plus, it's supposed to be a one-man project or something. Really, I think that those are the only reasons why it's so popular. It's simple logic, really: Japan's otakus like moe/loli + shmup combination, and weaboos like what the Japanese otakus like. Thus, weaboos also like moe/loli + shmup combination. Instant popularity in the west!
Other than that, Toehoe is your average shmup, but with high bullet density. I played it, and it just doesn't compare to other games of its kind (especially Einhander. I effin' love Einhander). _________________ The Bug-Eyed Man. |

Oh, don't get me wrong, I've no doubts of Toehoe's popularity. It's just that, in my honest opinion, I find nothing special about the game itself. No offense to Toehoe fans. _________________ The Bug-Eyed Man. |

Unfortunately, I agree that this applies to a lot of the Touhou fans, but I don't agree that it applies to all of them. Also, a lot of the "fans" haven't played (or don't even know about) the actual shmups. _________________

I've actually seen a lot of people that like Touhou who don't even play the games at all. Touhou in its entity is so much more than games. It's no joke saying that half the stuff in Comiket is Touhou stuff. _________________
