i was just wondering if i buy a North American PS2 console is it possible to play Tales of symphonia on it. is there an English version of tales of symphonia on PS2? or is just Japanese?
im asking this because the PS2 version has more constumes, skids, and moves then the gamecube version.

You would have to mod your North American PS2. Magic Keys is your friend for that.

There is no english version of ToS for ps2. If you're simply going to buy a PS2 just for ToS ps2, it'd probably be easiest just to buy a japanese PS2. Really hated modding mine.

On a normal North American, PS2 no.

Can it be modified to work? Oh hell yes it can.

You need a device called a modchip. I'd recommend getting either the Matrix Infinity or DMS4 modchips installed, since they will play ANY import PS2 game perfectly.

You could easily get it professionally installed for about $60 to $80. Just look through local online ads for a modder.

I do not recommend attempting to install the modchip yourself as it is very easy to mess up if you are not skilled at it.

You could also just get a Japanese PS2, but they cost around $200 on ebay usually. Not really recommended, especially since it will ONLY play Japanese games. A modded PS2 on the other hand will play ALL games from anywhere.

Also, whatever you do, DO NOT use swap magic. Not only do you have to swap discs everytime, but tons of great games do not work with it. I'm pretty sure Tales of Symphonia does, but I know like 5 other games it will not boot. Plus the swapping process wears out the DVD tray motor very fast.

Anyways, good luck in getting ToS working.

Also, here is the entire script for the game in English.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/gamecube/561316-tales-of-symphonia/faqs/38274

You can use that to understand the storyline as you play.

You do realize you only have to swap the disc once, right?

Modchips are easy to install, people make out that it's really hard and that you can damage your PS2 but tbh it's pretty hard to fail. Just make sure you find a guide with pictures, or even better a video guide and you'll have no problems.

Yes, EVERYTIME you turn on the system.

Also, it cannot read any game using a Dual-layer DVD9 disc.

So, NONE of the following games are playable:

The Matrix Infinity, DMS3 and DMS4 modchips can play ALL those games.

Well thanks a lot for telling me this now Mad !

It works fine for ToL and TotA at the very least but they play in their original colors (american) which are painfully bright on my TV and forcing them into PAL makes them take up just over half the screen (mostly the top half).

You need something like this http://cgi.ebay.ca/Multi-System-SECAM-PAL-NTSC-Video-Converter-/170514076475?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b36e533b

A PAL/NTSC converter. With game consoles its always better to let the console render the game in its native format and then use an external box to convert it.

Or you could just get a better TV with better NTSC support.

Besides, most of these boxes only seem to support composite video, and composite is gross. Component looks so much better its not funny.

Luckily for me, I don't live in PAL land. You guys have it tough sometimes.

Let's see, there are 10 games on that list that aren't released in the US.

TEN, out of the PS2's gigantic library. And upon further inspection, it seems there are some American flags missing on that list. Make that less than 10.

If you really want to play one of those less than 10 games, then sure, get a modchip.

Or, you could just buy Swap Magic and Magic Swap/Slide Card. It's easy, and you don't have to open up your PS2.

Sakura Taisen alone is worth the chip. This game is epic.

Mechs, awesome battle system, hand-drawn cutscenes, and cute anime girls everywhere. Character designs are even done by Kosuke Fujishima, who did designs for Ah Megami-sama and several Tales of games.

What's not to like?

No, Sakura Taisen 5 got an English release.

Sakura Taisen 1 did not.

Unfortunately, it had the stigma of coming out back when SEGA believed all America will buy is crappy Sonic games.

Ah, I was close. Anyway. If that one game is what you really want, then yes, modchip, not Swap Magic.
