The many dialog translation guides for various japan-only Tales of games has given me an idea.

We make a thread, and type out the script from the 360 ToV word for word. Once that is done, we find someone who is willing to translate the extra text from the Japanese PS3 ToV, and then after some editing, we have a fully translated transcript of the PS3 version.

I mean, 90% of the translation is done already, so this should be much easier than translating a game from scratch, such as Rebirth.

I've already started a script and currently I'm just at Halure.

So, anyone here want to get involved in this?

It's nice and noble and all but "90% of the translation being done already" isn't exactly true. There's a lot more than what you think was added onto there. Also, I don't recall the PS3 being hacked to the point where people have been using burned ISOs on them. Or dubbed ISOs for that matter.

I wasn't thinking of actually hacking the game.

More along the lines of a .txt file you just read as you play.

hacking a game is way beyond my expertise XD.

the idea behind this is just so anyone can import ToV PS3, having never played the game before, and understand the storyline as they play, similar to how people played Tales of Destiny and Rebirth using the translation scripts available.

Besides, the extra text can always just be temporarily labeled "tba" or something, and slowly can be fixed up when/ifever someone feels like contributing to it.

I personally think this is better than having to watch people play the 360 version on youtube as you follow along on PS3, like I did my first time through.

I don't think Estelle was talking about hacking the game, just ripping the script, so it could be accessed outside of the game.

And I'd be interested in a walkthrough for the PS3 version, given as I'll most likely be importing it soon. I would help with the script, but I sold my 360. ^^;

Anything would be appreciate though. And I'd say 90% is still off. You're going to have to go back through all the dialog from the 360 version and add Patty/Flynn dialog.

Well, actually, I don't own the game on 360 myself anymore either. I've just been using other people's youtube playthroughs XD.

In fact, that's actually a MUCH easier way to do this I find, since I can pause, and I don't have to play the game just to read the dialog, I can just skip straight to the dialog itself.

Also, I am aware how much extra dialog Flynn and Patty have, as I have beaten the PS3 version myself.

My idea is to add them in last. Like, going through the 360 script, once its typed in, adding in blank spaces where the ps3 dialog needs to be added, then, hoping I can find a translator willing to finish.

Thing is, I have faith that if i can get all the already translated text typed out, there will be at least someone willing to help with the rest, especially if this is in a publicly editable place.

also,

http://www.youtube.com/user/lunaroutcast

this guy has a very good quality playthrough of the entire main storyline of the game.

Also, here is what I've got so far:

Just to clarify, a hack-translation of the game wouldn't work. Maybe on the 360 because these guys are doing a Spanish translation of the game but the PS3 is a whole other beast, no-one seems to be able to crack it.

I like the idea of the .txt script. I think as a community effort it could be achieved.

I could help with typing out the Vesperia 360 script (I have the game), but I don't have the PS3 version and I don't understand Japanese.

I have a few things to ask, though.
-How in-depth will this go? Do you want to also transcribe in-battle conversations, conversations with NPCs, skills, artes, etc?
-Not a question, but a comment- you may have to include Japanese words at points to help players identify which skits are being watched, how to solve the "sun" puzzle in Japanese, which skills are which, etc.

If you want, I'll start at the end of the storyline and I can also write down items, artes, skills, etc, since it's hard to read them on a video walkthrough.

Well my goal is to do basically do the most important dialog related to the main story first, so all cutscenes, main dialog, etc. I think for the first draft we should skip all skits and stuff like that, the goal being to first give people something they can use to at least understand the main storyline.

I think something like skits would come after the main storyline is translated, especially since some skits are altered a TON in the ps3 version.

Another thing is we would need to include the japanese titles for the skits, so people know what they are clicking on.

As for the sun/taiyou word puzzle, I would just explain the word you need to type in, "taiyou", and for those who can't read any japanese at all, include exactly what buttons to press (ie, go down 2 rows, across 2, etc).

I'd suggest forgetting about the artes for now, since guides for those exist. I'd say the main story line should be the first priority for now.

For you, starting at the end and moving back could work quite well actually.

Basically though we need an organized mannor which we can edit. maybe we could go by version numbers or something, and i guess we can consider the .txt file i uploaded to be v0.01 or something ,and everytime someone adds to it, they could just rename the file v0.02, etc, and then just keep uploading them to mediafire.

I think people can use Kouli's guide for this, since he even typed out the kana needed for taiyou as well. There's only one word puzzle in this game after all; the only other one that people might struggle against is the Waitress game since it's brute force for non-Japanese readers (there's a chart for this).

Of course, if you are referring to something like this for the people who can't use Kouli's guide...

then I think it works nicely.

Well, the waitress mini-game is easy if you're a fast writer/typer and if memory serves doesn't the pause/PSN button work when copying down the writing? Though for people with PVRs it isn't a problem Very Happy Also, I could probably help with the translation of the story/artes/skills/skits.

The amount of time it takes doesn't really affect whether you pass a level or not. It just yields less Gald. As long as you get most or all of the dishes down correctly, then you'll pass.

My main problem isn't copying it down or anything. It's just that I don't know when a customer is trying to retract his order or not. Supposedly, there's 2-3 phrases they use to retract their orders.

Ok, here's how I think we could get this going.

Start by always having a copy of the lasted script. Then, before you add anything to it, make a post saying what you plan to add, to prevent 2 people from unnessesarily doing the same part.

Once you finish, use the edit button to post a mediafire.com link to your copy.

Always update the version number in the file, so, for example, if you are adding to tov_script_v0.0001, then you would name your updated file v0.0002.

If you would rather not edit in a linear fashion like this, then simply upload a text file with just the part you typed out, and just explain in your post what parts you typed out, so they can then be added to the main script.

This is mainly to keep the main script clean and easier to add to, since it will eventually become rather large.

Anyways, tonight I'm going to do from this part of the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly-KrPcqiWw&feature=related
to about here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7itKLc-btFw&feature=related

I'll post v0.0002 once done.

I guess I'll do the ending cutscenes and the pre-final boss lines, then. I'll have to wait until the weekend to do all the alternate lines, though.

Do you mind if I post my lines here or PM it to you, rebel_against_destiny? I don't have an account to load things to mediafire, and besides my Internet is ultra-slow. >.<
