|

I don't know if this should be posted in here, but I don't see anywhere else to post. Sorry for the noobness.
What I call a "relay-run rewrite" is basically a retelling of an existing plot. Any user that has proven they are proficient enough to write (through a writing sample) can jump in at any time. They also have to loosely know the plot of the Tales game we're doing, lest they have difficulty/hit spoilers.
It's called "relay-run" because of the way the next poster has to continue on where the previous poster had left off, all while sticking to the plot of the game. During their turn, the current poster takes control of everything -- from the main party to the NPCs, from the sights to the smells, thoughts and emotions. For this to work, it is absolutely necessary to write in third person.
To prevent one person from advancing the plot too much, there might be a list of major plot points/quests (Synopsis, etc.) and a to be determined number of posts before hitting another plot point. This doesn't mean you shouldn't write long posts! It forces you even more to do the description.
General character descriptions may also be listed as a reference as a reminder on how to play them, along with a Synopsis of the plot in whole and a map/location guide. It doesn't matter if the game script isn't followed word-for-word, so as long as you get the characters, setting and plot right, you're good.
In other words (The actual thing should be much more longer and not just done by memory like I did)...

User A:
"Yuri! Hey Yuri, wake up!"
Yuri Lowell did not like the rude awakening given by the excited and high-pitched shouts of one of the boys of the lower quarter. All while reculantly getting up from his bed, he noted to himself that he should ask the inn manager to fix the lock on his door.
Turning his attention back to the boy that was waiting patiently for his response, he asked, "What, did something happen, Ted? You're not often worked up enough to risk catching me with a lack of sleep."
User B:
"The lower quarter's flooded! Everyone's helping out, and Auntie wants you to go, too!" answered Ted. Now done his errand, the boy dashed back out of Yuri's room.
The swordsman soon followed after shaking the sleep out of his head. He remembered recently that everyone had poured their resources in getting the aque blastia -- the fountain in the center of the area -- fixed. Apparently the one who repaired the blastia did a poor job.
Tax Collection Day had just passed, but that didn't prevent him from taking his sword with him as a precaution. Those tax collecting knights could be lurking just around the corner, ready to arrest him again.
Those damn nobles, why do they need more from those who have nothing?
User C:
He saw Repede lying down at the foot of the wooden stairs leading up to the room that the innkeeper was nice enough to let him stay in.
At the sight of his master, the armed dog got to his feet and uttered a "Woof!" in greeting. Yuri merely nodded, before heading to where he was needed.
Sounds of rushing water and panicked inhabitants were heard. Ted wasn't kidding. The entire square was covered in a layer of water almost reaching up to his knees. Those of the lower quarter were busy fishing out their belongings, as trying to get the water out bucket by bucket was a hopeless task.
Yuri noticed that the usual gem in the fountain wasn't present, though nobody else seemed to notice.

There may or may not be "sidequest" wiggle room, bits that aren't really in the original plot. But since one user takes control of everything for his or her single post, it may be hard to co-ordinate it with someone else.
Maybe throw a gimmick into there too, if the main story itself is too bland. I remember Veileddarkness' "Different Jobs" on GameFAQs (a long time ago) had this kind of style, but swapped the roles of the Symphonia characters before starting.
I'm asking first before executing, since even though it promotes creativity by forcing players to imagine things while still sticking to a base, it doesn't need any creativity on my, the creator's, part.
From the looks of it, Symphonia's probably the way to go... if I can get the relay-run rewrite idea through. _________________

For the sake of clarity and fairness, I honestly don't think the latter two would be of much concern. Firstly, you could easily counteract the second issue by warning people beforehand in the description of the RP or the thread title. And really, if you join an RP called something like "Tales of Vesperia Retelling!" without expecting spoilers... well...
Then, for the third issue... well, that seems like a completely invalid point anyway, since it's a re-telling and therefore an appropriation with no (or at least, very little) legal obligations.
But, the first point IS a concern, considering how much one person can throw off the plot, and judging by the hundreds of Symphonia RPs that have spawned recently, you might not get a lot of people joining. Original RPs TEND to do better (with some exceptions).
Edit: Yes, it definitely IS an RP _________________
