In MT's defense, you were playing a game that only asks you to be a dick in return for even playing it. _________________

To be fair, MvC2 is a rather old game. |
3rd Strike came out a year before Marvel and some people here still play that.
That logic doesn't really make sense. _________________

Eh. I think Marvel's fun as hell if you just play it casually with a couple of friends every now and then.
But it's also one of those games where I really can't have any fun if the person I'm playing against is leagues better than me at it. _________________

I agree with cloud. MvC 2 is fun casually, but is just too broken to get into deeply. I hope if this gets announced it's based more off MvC 1. _________________

I'm in the small group of people that prefer 1 to 2. They feel like completely different games.
2 has waaaay too much **** going on at once for my liking. I know that's half the fun of it, but I would never bother ever trying to get good at it because of that, and the whole balancing issue.
2 has playable Rogue, though. <3 _________________

Oh, don't get me wrong, I prefer 1 to 2 as well (I think most people on Tales do, from what I've seen).
I still think 2 is pretty fun though when you've got a bunch of friends to play with who aren't very good at it either. _________________

There's a chance I'd prefer MvC2 but I never had the chance to play it much, certainly not as much as I played MvC, especially with Sam

mvc 2 is one of those games with a very strong, competive community, fitting for a game considered to be one of the most revered fighting games ever, and i find it too much effort to get good at it. i barely understand what's going on when i play it anyway.
the brokenness doesn't seem to have affected its community much, there are plenty of more relatively well balanced fighters that haven't stood the test of time. balance isn't the be-all and end-all factor of whether a fighter is viable competitively, but it sure helps a lot.
also as an aside mvc1 had issues as well, it was by no means better balanced than mvc2, complete with its own hilarious glitches.
caveat: most of my knowledge of mvc2 comes from reading many, many debates on mvc2 on places like shoryuken and neo empire, as well as something awful, which has given me a little knowledge of the game. |

You know you're lying. I'm not going to go out and say that it MvC1 didn't have its problems, but it damn well wasn't as retarded as MvC2 in a competitive spotlight.

Pretty much this for me somewhat. I took the time to actually waste my life getting good at this game back on the DC, but I still didn't care for the huge roster and things they added and removed subsequently. 2 does have some characters I really like, such as Shuma-Gorath, but the game itself was somewhat of a letdown, with the major improvement in my eyes only being the roster and 3v3 teams. _________________

you say that, yet mvc 2 is the one that has stood the test of time, being still played seriously at least a decade after its first release, whereas mvc1 has a small if not nonexistant scene outside of ggpo. i think something is wrong there.
unless there's some underground dedicated mvc1 scene i'm just not aware of, then by all means prove me wrong |

Marvel > Capcom 3?
Seriously though, the arcades and 'competitive' scene is filled with Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, Cable, Cyclops, etc... Not that the Capcom characters were bad or anything it's just that they don't do well against characters who have an arsenal of (multi-hit) projectiles and ridiculous spam tactics. _________________ Support XSEED | Listen to Falcom music | Do life the right way

I'd like to think MvC2 stood the test of time just because it has (almost) everybody. In fact, that seems to be the reason most anyone ever states as the reason they'll play it. It had characters which hadn't been seen since Children of the Atom, so I'm not surprised.
For me, MvC2 is just bad, not even for just the whole balancing debate and whatnot, but moreso because it's way less professional as a game. It's clearly just there so casual people can have fun.
Character themes were removed. Same for victory quotes. They removed mid buttons to attract casual people as well as fit the actual controls on the DC (and I guess to fit that shiny third person on your team). Duo Team Attack was one of the cooler things about the game and they removed that as well. The sound quality for hits against the opponent are also very tame sounding in MvC2, and I know that little bit is nitpicking, but I want my Hyper Megaman to make the original noise when the beam hit opponents.
Granted, this is only a few things that I personally liked about MvC1, but my point is that people disregard it all in favor for a gigantic roster filled with characters they probably hadn't played as in years and a shiny #2 in the title, completing that there'd be no reason to play 1 over it. _________________

mvc2 is unique in that it essentially happened by accident. the game was made on the cheap, received little testing yet inexplicably became popular because it was considered interesting, you know. among the viable tier of characters there's a character for every playstyle, and that's not to mention the many possible team combinations. plus, the huge technical execution barrier some characters have keeps people coming back.
and besides, a lot of people consider it interesting to watch, people get excited over it, and so people get interested in the game and start playing it, thus building a community.
estelle the marvel characters at the top essentially have huge advantages over the capcom cast. magneto has an 8-way air dash and ridiculous mixup ability, storm can literally fly, cyclops is just all around good, sentinel can hover about and attack with lasters and can blow through normals and cable can punish you for whiffing a move from the entire screen away and do massive damage for 3 bars. not to mention the other characters lower down the list who still work, or just have great assists.
the problem with this is that for every character on the lower end of the tiers, there's probably someone up the top end of such who does everything that lower tier character can do but better, but lower tier characters can still win given enough skill at the hands of the player. look up videos of VDO playing sometime. |

I'm aware that 2 was a much bigger success than 1, but yeah, I still prefer 1. It feels a lot more polished to me, even though it has its fair share of wacky **** too.
I honestly find it really hard to concentrate while playing 2, just because of how much stuff is going on. Team changes, snapbacks, constant assist spamming, etc. It's too much for me to focus on, so I much prefer 1's somewhat simpler presentation. _________________
