Yeah, it's hard to totally tell. There definietly had to have been some character that Raine was close to that we don't know about because of the whole "him" scene. I strongly believe that there was a guy she fell in love with and after he found out she was a half-elf, he discarded her and Genis and that is another attribute as to why she feels half-elves are discriminated and why she is so cold to humans.
This would also bring to light about Genis' saying, "You humans are all the same." It is obvious that both Genis and Raine were burned by humans, so Genis was very close to some human then they abandoned them. Also, don't forget Genis' skit where he tells Lloyd that after they became friends, he was finally able to have some faith in humans. |

Ya know, after reading all of this I feel like I have missed a lot of things in this game, even though I have beat it around 8 times. I definately will be focusing on the affection more than ever this time to see if I can find some different dialogue.

Kahahahah These discussions are so fun XD
the Kratos theory is the best XD... except that it would make most of in-game pairings to be incest o.0
But going back to their mother, I think we have another not exploired hole in DotNW 
We not only don't visit Exalia (or whatever was the name of that floating village XD) but Raine and Genis returned their Airbirds to Yuan. So... wouldn't this mean that they haven't visited their mother in a long time??!
I understand Genis case, since he has some resistance in accepting her as their mother, but I always imagined that Raine would come to visit her once in a while
Well... I imagine the floating village should come closer to the ground in some place so it would be still be possible to go there without Airbirds, but would be a lot harder.

That's what the diary was for. Raine got her closure on the matter through that.
