A comment I came across on Youtube
'Yuri is the best JRPG Protagonist!'
Isn't that mainly because sides from the fact that he's basically an pixelated video-game character he believably human?
Yuri to me has an--how you say realistic personality, he doesn't unnecessarily overreact nor act like some JRPG-Robot over one small event like most protagonists of today ever play Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean 4 or Infinite Undiscovery? Jeez how many movements dose there body's need to progress? Whats with all the corny and or UNNECESSARY YELLING Spaced-Out voice acting? JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THIS! With that being said doesn't all of those unnecessary movements like cost extra money animation-wise or something?
So unless I'm not playing enough JRPG's I'm pretty much I'm going to have to agree with the comment, although not just Yuri but the whole main Brave Vesperia cast. Other than;fighting monsters, magic, and "Saving the World" I can really see Yuri n' company chatting it up walking across the street on there way to the mall. As to what they would chat about one would have to use there imaginations.
Sorry for the rambling I really needed to vent this out because It's been on my mind for quite some time long before reading the comment, and I wanted to know what others feet about Yuri Lowell, is he truly the only best JRPG protagonist?
Probably the worst place to ask such an request but I was hoping that those that who picked up Vesperia based on an review and not because they played an other Tales titled Namco JRPG's would share there insight in this post--of course anyone is free to say whatever yet it would be nice.
One an side note yesterday when I took my rarely once in two weeks visit to 4Chan I came across an board on /v/ about why JRPG characters of today are feminine-like and naming Yuri an 'Murderer who's girly' something along the context of those lines. I was just wondering as to how these made people feel...

I cant really call him an 'murderer'....YET I could net wrong...prove it to me. _________________

On an objective stance most likely, I still enjoyed Luke more though... _________________

Now, I may not have played as many JRPGs as most people here, as I didn't have a PS2 until recently, but I can definitely say that Yuri is my favorite protagonist out of any game I've played. (I can't speak for games I haven't played though)
Why?
1-He saves the world/helps people because he WANTS to. Not because of some prophecy, or some horrible childhood, but because he CAN.
2-While he does get emotional over some things, he tends not to overreact as often as the normal hero (as you stated).
3-DESTRUCTION FIELD (<Joke Reason)
4- Most of the time, he thinks relatively logically, and is not short-sighted like many protagonists. He is also rather skilled at communicating his point to others, even though they may not agree with him, others understand why he did what he did.
--- Although at one point, he seems hypocritical, and many criticize him for it, there are multiple ways one could interpret this instance. Whether he is simply human and is contradicting himself, or whether because he's trying to get Pharoah to bug off, I didn't have a problem with that particular ill.
5-something I can't remember right now, but I know there's another one.
Although, Vesperia was not my first tales title(SYMPHONIA FTW!), It was my...fourth? or fifth. I forget whether I played Legendia before or after. I've played ToS, TotA, ToP, ToSDotNW, and ToL. In terms of other RPGs, I've played .hack, Star Ocean 3, Enchanted Arms, a few Final Fantasy games, Fire Emblem&Luminous Arc (SRPGs), and a few others I'm probably forgetting.
Oh, and I like the Chaotic Good image quite a bit. And the only possibly girly thing about Yuri is his hair. Then again, I have a friend whose a guy who has hair about the same length so >.> _________________ I am a guy. |

Yuri is a bit of a hypocrite and an elitist and the game never calls him on it, so he's not exactly perfect. I'm not sure if I'd consider him the best jrpg protagonist, but he's certainly a great one. _________________

About Yuri's girly hair, I believe that was made to be a contrast to Flynn's short, spiky hair.
And yeah, Yuri kicks ass. _________________ You are entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to call it wrong and steal your name. |

| For me Yuri is the second best jrpg protagonist with my first being Fei Fong Wong from Xenogears. Fei was just a very very very deep character (also Xenogears is my favorite game). |

Yuri is my favorite protagonist from the JRPG's I've played, but there are still a lot I want to play and need time to get around too, it might change in the future but for now he has the #1 spot on my list. _________________

I never liked long haired Luke and his whining, but I have to say, after he learned his rights from doing wrong, he became my fave main protagonist. And aside from the bad, square-like graphics of the game, TotA was my favorite Tales game compared to ToV. The story definately beat ToV's, and Im at the final boss. In ToV, Karol and Raven in my opinion weren't very good. Their healing artes are the only reason I like them in battle. Even though Raven's magic and Karol's hot Towel Boy costume are 2 other reasons. That's a bit off-topic...Whoops.
Anyway, Yuri does have that 'i dont care if your going to suffocate in the quicksands and die, Cummore, what you did is unforgivable, and besides, your name sounds kinky.' and I love his dark side, but Luke's reign of redemption over powers it, in my opinion. |

Best Ever? No, if only because I personally believe it's too hard to ever label anything a "Best Ever". That said because of how outside then norm he is for the genre he definitely is one of the better standout heroes.
My personal favorite however is still Haseo from .Hack//GU. _________________ *Sig by WarriorAngel01*

I would say BEST Tales protagonist to date but best JRPG character is a stretch. I mean, he's a great guy and all and I haven't played a majority of currently existing JRPGs so I won't judge him with only such a limited experience. But I will say that he is a pretty damn good hero.

The hypocrisy is arguably a double-standard. I know he says "You gotta cut an infected part even if it's a friend or Entelexia" but the fact that he never went through it makes it ambiguous. To me, it's just a declaration that he never followed through with because he changed his mind or realized he could not follow through with it.
Buuuuut that's just my 69 cents. *Shrug* _________________ Support XSEED | Listen to Falcom music | Do life the right way

No. It's a blatant contradiction or a double standard. He tells Judith that he will kill her if she can't be trusted.
Then, after Ba'ul 'evolves' you fly to Phaeroh where he COMPLETEY contradicts himself while defending Estelle. And no one acknowledges this fact. Really, if someone would have said "Yuri... But you said..."
But nope.
Also, I never got a family vibe from the Vesperia cast. The party was sort of cliquish. Rita and Judith rarely interacted. During that scene where Repede and Karol go off ahead to investigate and Yuri, Rita, and Judith are alone...
It's literally an awkward silence.
The Abyss cast had a much stronger bond. |
