Sometimes the best way to protect someone... is to kill them.

The two realms of existence have always had contact with each other. They keep to themselves for the most part--until there is a crime to be punished.

Carter Roloden, a common petty thief, takes one misstep that sends himself, his brother, Zemin, and five others into the heap of mysteries that surrounds their futures. Unraveling the events leads them to past secrets long since forgotten and tossed aside, driving them all to commit one fatal crime that puts both realms in jeopardy. But with the gods gone, they must find a way to restore the balance themselves...

Belle is happy with her job at the church and approaches almost everything with the same enthusiasm. When others are down, she tries to cheer them up, but she's also quick to snap if her patience is tried.

Occupation: Guard
Weapon: Polearm
Class: Melee/Mage

A stoic and devoted guard, Clint is usually quiet, but he can open up when the right topic is presented. His brusque and somewhat awkward manner of wording things sometimes leaves others thinking he is upset.

Occupation: Worker (docks/shipping)
Weapon: Fists
Class: Melee/Support

Carcy met Belle a few years ago, and the two optimists are good friends. She is a hard worker and prefers the sea to the farming town she grew up in. Carcy is popular with the locals, and she likes helping out others whenever she can, but everyone has their limits...



Neil Fordber

Age: 28
Occupation: Researcher
Weapon: Dakar (large shield-like boomerang)
Class: Ranged/Mage/Healing

Neil can go from quiet and secretive to maliciously upbeat in a matter of minutes. He is proud of his accomplishments, but he can't keep a secret unless the stakes are dire. He joins Carter's group for “in-depth field research.”



Brith Fordber

Age: 16
Occupation: None
Weapon: Chain staff
Class: Ranged/Mage/Healing

Brith is Neil's younger sister. She is typically low-key, and she is quietly determined to complete everything she sets out to do. Brith seems to have a following despite not being particularly good with words.



Zemin Roloden

Class: Melee/Healing

Zemin moved away from Torta Savaar when he was Carter's age. He visits his family occasionally, and he has sworn to liberate them from poverty as soon as he can. He doesn't speak much of where he works or what he does, but his parents and younger sibling are confident that he'll pull through for them one day.

Olni
Carter's mother. Her first son, Zemin, left home when he was 16, and two years later, she had Carter. Her third child was stillborn, and she is afraid that any more children would not only destroy her relationship with her remaining son but would present the opportunity for another loss.

Lark
Carter's father. He taught Carter the art of theft, though he's no master at it himself. He disapproves of Carter's skittish nature, but he doesn't try to remedy it. He wants more children; however, Olni refuses.

King Brial
The ruler of Torta Savaar and the surrounding area. He is a generally fair king, and he sees connecting with his subjects as an important part of his task. He handles even the most private of legal affairs personally, but there is only so much he can do despite the hardships his town has faced.

Enther Lorec
The head of Ardasia's Church of Vin, the largest Bilthoran church in the world. He is generally welcoming and kind to everyone, but sometimes he pushes his religion upon people a little too much. He, like most devout Bilthorans, holds a special contempt for Dithangrans.

Denny

Belle's father. He works with her at the Church of Vin. Denny is quite the prankster, and his antics have rubbed off on his daughter. Both are conservative with money even though they have more than enough to spare, so they live comfortably but not luxuriously. His wife died three years ago, but he and Belle have long since gotten over it.

Pascale
Carcy's mother. She has a total of seven children, and despite her smoking habit, she is fairly healthy. She and her husband run the family farm in Odell Village.

These realms are not planets--they exist in the same space. Both worlds share landforms, rivers, and Pillars. Pillars are places where the opposite world's magic breaks through the boundary between them. They appear as waterfalls that reach the heavens in their dominant realm and as “stars” in the same place when viewed from the opposing world.

Magic

The Slipstream is the current of magic emerging from the Temple of Vin in the east and flowing to the Temple of Jith in the west. Water is the medium in which magic is the strongest. For 10 hours, the water is bright (“daytime”), and for 10 hours, it is dark (“nighttime”).

Dithangran magic is more powerful in Bilthora than it is in Dithangra (and vice versa).

Gods and Religion

The god of Bilthora.

The Holy Scroll, created when the worlds were, contains a documentation of the history since the beginning of time, and current events are continually being added. While present in both worlds, the text differs between them.

Both gods played a part in creating the worlds; however, they are considered detrimental to each other. Since Jith created the Dithangran half, he is the devil to Bilthorans (and vice versa). Magic is distributed by Bilthora and recycled by Dithangra, thus, if only one world existed, it would have a larger supply of magic.

There have been no major wars because Vin and Jith have made it nearly impossible to travel between the realms.

There are four Pillars in each realm. At either end of the Pillar, a spirit guards them, and until a pact is made, no one can travel to the opposite world from that Pillar. (For example, a Pillar in Dithangra is guarded by Efreet. Until a pact is made with Efreet, no one can travel through the Pillar; but if a pact is made, it would become possible to travel from Dithangra to Bilthora through that Pillar but not back through it.)
