It's simple really. Raine is a pure healer while Natalia and Tear both dabble in more offensive artes.
As such, Raine can do the only thing she really does better.

They work well (and better) together. I prefer Natalia as the (controlled) main healer, because she can attack a little from afar when no healing is required, and because Tear has more potential in offensive spells. Though she's also good to keep for some back-up healing if the situation requires it.

Why is it called "Tales of the Abyss" if there is Raine there?

I usually just use Tear for in battle healing and Natalia for out of battle healing.

Natalia is the better healer for regular battles because Tear's Healing Circle sucks. I use both Tear and Natalia in boss battles and later in the game in regular battles too, because Tear gets really broken later on.

I'll have to go with what Yume Hanabi said.

I kept Tear out of my party as much as possible because of the annoying singing. Occasionally though, I liked to play as Tear and melee attack everything because the range of her basic attacks is rather nice.

THIS.

Plus, Raine isn't bad at all, except that you have to REALLY work to get her to get both sides of the spells (Cure and Revive ALONG WITH Healing Circle and Revitalize), PLUS, any high level spells not only lag horribly before, but also after...
And really, one healer for a team of four isn't really enough at all... Especially in Symphonia where there were no FoFs to save the meleer(s) from immediate death.

Funnily, I thought Symphonia was the only game where one healer was enough (because the AoE of Raine spells are so damn big that she heals everyone plenty. Plus the casting time is decent if she's the only spellcaster.

This IS true, ONCE you've actually gotten her area heals. Until she gets Nurse or Revitalize (which are whole field coverage), she is too slow at the First Aids... Plus, if you go the Heal, Cure, Revive route, she is DEFINITELY ineffective.

Also, since we used Kratos and Genis, we generally had a lot of casters. So that was another point of contention. And Genis does the most damage of anyone, especially since he gets the most powerful spells in the game. Oh, yah, we also used Sheena sometimes for her summons )which were few and far between, yes, but still awesome) and for her interesting seal spells (Raince casting Revitalize and someone dies, just have Sheena cast Purgatory Seal).

Kratos/Zelos do a decent job of backing up Raine's healing.

The one thing that irratates me in TotA is that though Tear has better area heals (good in emergencies), Natalia is the only one with status heals (and I'm an item miser). I really should get around to using Angel's Breath more often, but I'm too lazy to build the FoFs except in major fights.

I generally use both in my party- they complement each other well and with Spirit Symbols I don't have to worry about TP.

Too bad the AI can really annoying with this. I can remember yelling "Guy, stop back-stepping out of healing circle!"

Angel Bless is only useful against bosses imo. The casting takes a while, so you'd better use Heal or something, and you don't need the Revive effect against simple monsters. But I love to use it when fighting bosses, especially Van because he gives you plenty of brown and purple FoFs =)

I love using Angel Bless (though I dislike the name Breath, since it was obviously meant to Bless), it looks great and has the best effect out of any other spell in the game.
