Ok, here is the chart of best selling games from 22 to 28 August. So It covers 4 days for ToL (and other new releases).
Quote:
1. PS2 Tales of Legendia - Namco - 242,000 (new)
2. PS2 Gundam Seed Destiny: Generation of C.E. - Bandai - 118,000 (new)
3. PS2 Naruto Uzumaki Ninden - Bandai - 34,000 (130,000)
4. NDS Nou wo Kitaeru Otona no DS Training - Nintendo - 32,000 (454,000)
5. PS2 Winning Eleven 9 - Konami - 30,000 (762,000)
6. PS2 Winning Post 7 - Koei - 28,000 (new)
7. NDS Yawaraka Atamajuku - Nintendo - 28,000 (412,000)
8. NDS Jump Super Stars - Nintendo - 28,000 (306,000)
9. GBA Mushiking - Sega - 15,000 (505,000)
10. NDS Akumajou Dracula: Sougetsu no Juujika - Konami - 15,000 (new)

In comparision...in the same time (4 days):
Tales of Symphonia (PS2) debuted at 257.000, ended at 395.000
Tales of Rebirth (PS2) debuted at 334.000, ended at 595.000

So, 242k is not a good number, however they sold 75% of the stock, but it seems it is going to be the least seller "tales" ever (if you don't count symphonia separated).

------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the chart from 29 august to 4 September:
Quote:
1. PS2 Tales of Legendia - 52,000 (294,000)
2. NDS DS Training For Adults - 34,000 (487,000)
3. NDS Gentle Brain Exercises - 31,000 (444,000)
4. PS2 Gundam Seed Destiny: Generation of C.E. - 28,000 (146,000)
5. PSP BLEACH 2 - 26,000 NEW
6. NDS Jump Super Stars - 22,000 (327,000)
7. PS2 Winning Eleven 9 - 21,000 (783,000)
8. PS2 Naruto Uzumaki Ninden - 17,000 (147,000)
9. GBA Mushiking - Sega - 13,000 (518,000)
10. PS2 Winning Post 7 - 11,000 (39,000)

Tales of Rebirth did 72k in its 2nd week (and 372k), so no, ToL isnt recovering. I think it is going to pass 400k, maybe it'll reach 450k after months...but very dissapointing sales. Tales of the Abyss doesnt have a bright future.

Well this is a shock, I would have at least figured it would sell more than both versions of TOS combined. =/

That doesnt mean they will sell them in the first days. I remember 500k preorders for ToR and only managed 335k in 4 days, however it went to 600k at last. ToL will likely get stuck at 400k...

Well, if you consider the other games in the list, it isn't so bad. Maybe the population couldn't afford games this time of year?

You also have to remember ToR was released RIGHT before Christmas : o. That probably affected the sales in some way.

Seems Japanese game sales overall are taking a hit currently, might be a factor to ToL sales. Or perhaps casual RPG fans are getting tired of Namco milking Tales this gen or something, not that other franchises haven't released more...

Grandia 3 hasnt reached 200k yet. Shadow Hearts 3 didnt reach 100k (its like 60k). Summon Night 3 sold 100k in 4 days but dissapeared from charts. Pokemon X.D (it is also a RPG...) hasnt reach 200k yet...

Well, ToR was released in Christmas but really near Dragon Quest VIII (3.5m) and the same day as Metal Gear Solid 3 (900k).

RPG market (I'd say the entire japanese market) is in recession...

Added to first post....ToL total is 294k while in the same time ToR was around 444k. Dissapointing :/

Dengeki (the other figures are from Media-Create) have a slighty different numbers for Tales of Legendia 2nd week..

Too many games came out in August, that's why.

ToR didn't have much competition last year, it was basically the only high quality title coming out that month, so it did well.

But this August, Grandia III, ToL, Jump Superstars, etc.

Generally Japanese gamers are like American gamers. If you throw too many high quality titles together in one month, they'll decide which they like most and buy that one instead of the others, saving them for another month or so.

However, since the holiday season is coming up, it makes it much more difficult, and sales as a whole could decline. Because everyone wants to get their games out there, and it makes it tough for consumers to get everything. In general, both American and Japanese gamers usually only buy one game a month. Especially long time gamers.

ToR started along Metal Gear Solid 3 (900k) and little after Dragon Quest VIII which sold 3.5m.

ToL only had Winning Eleven 9 (800k) and 3rd Super Robot Taisen (1 month ago, 580k). So no.
