I think the Japanese version is frickin' hilarious! The faces of the victims are so funny! I'm not sure what it is about Japanese culture, but for some reason, they find close-up shots of the eyes to be scary. At least the US version tries to take itself seriously and the faces don't make you laugh. _________________

I read on the internet that which ever version you watch first, that is the version you think is more scary. Personally, I can't comment on them because I've only seen the American versions (The Ring 1&2). IMO, The Ring is scary, The Ring 2 is hilarious. That scene of Samara crawling out of the well reminds me of Smeagle.
However, I strongly recommend anyone who's seen the movie (or not) to read the original novels by Suzuki Koji. The original Ring trilogy is not scary---it's more like a suspense/mystery/science-fiction novel. There are some inappropriate parts in them (such as slight descriptions of sexual intercourse), and melancholy moments too. The first and second books were already published by Vertical, Inc. under the titles Ring and Spiral respectively, and the third book, Loop, along with the collection of side-stories, Birthday, will also get published in English soon. I've written a brief overview of the trilogy on my Xanga, if you're interested:

i saw ringu first and the american version is still way scarier
Ringu isn't scary although i still liked it more then the american version
why? Because in Ringu they explain ALOT more of the story then the american version... Oh yeah and there isn't some stupid smart alec(i doubt i spelled it right) acting like a complete genius XD
Anyways my point is that If you want to see a scarier one, see The Ring. If you want to see one that makes sense, see Ringu |

Okay, I wnet over to my girlfriend's house to watch it with her and her best friend. They were like freaking out, hiding behind me and shutting there eyes, and I was just sitting there, like...
"This sucks."
It was a real letdown. I was expecting something horrifying. _________________ R.I.P Raijinken - It was fun while it lasted. |

I didn't enjoy the Ring or The Ring 2, just didn't like them.
Ringu was better, it's fact. |

| I watched it once. I'm not sure that it was scary, but more creepy and weird. It certainly makes you look at your television twice though. ^_^ |
