One of my favorite movies is The Last Samurai.

I actually wanted the movie to be a little bit longer; it was so well directed that it never felt like two or so hours. It is also places a lasting impression upon viewers, I believe and is very memorable. It's right up there with all these Miyazaki movies in my mental "Favorite Movies" list.
I believe it was a very well-done movie, however, like many good movies, it was released at a bad time, and henceforth, never really got the appreciation it deserved. But I guess that may also be a good thing. If too many people love something, it can grow overrated. However, I'm sure there many loyal fans of this movie outh there in the forums.... aren't there?
There aren't any bad things I can think of about this movie, to be honest. It's absolutely fantastic, if not very sad in many places; I cried in one scene. Man, I feel like a movie critic. I gotta stop.

I know a really strange fact: The man who was Emperor Meiji in the movie actually more closely resembles Emperor Showa (Emperor Hirohito). Besides, all the Meiji images we have today do not depict his appearance at the beginnings of his reign, so, I guess they decided it was logical to use Emperor Showa (without the glasses)as a reference. BTW, Meiji first ascended the Imperial throne at the age of 15.

i actually think this movie is perfect. i cant imagine it being better. amazing acting, amazing action, amazing scenery, a touch of tragedy and humor but with a subtle happy ending, its truly a triumph

What the??? Everyone likes this movie??? *dies* I can't believe it ... I had expected everyone to be ranting about how bad it is ... argh ... so ... crappy.

I might as well say why I think that it's crappy. The thing is, this movie had nothing really very gripping or imaginative in it. Plus, it's totally Hollywoodised. It fits into no real timeline, and, no offense, but Tom Cruise is already a bad actor ... he's only popular because he looks good. And even he wasn't his best in this film, either. The film relied heavily upon special effects, at least when you think of the way it was advertised - as being a semi-based-on-a-true-story flick.

Meh. That's just my opinion, I suppose.

Ok it might not fit perfectly into time but its a situation that is very realistic in Japans history. Also, i dont think theres really any logical defense against Cruise in that one. I mean there was nothing offensive about him, on the contrary he was excellent. So thats why i dont get the Hollywoodized part. The special effects part is just wrong, most if it is all real so i dont get what that has to do with anything

It's divided between the ones who love and the ones who hate
I think this movie is great and the story is very good since the begin until the end, the ambient was perfect and how the protagonist learns the Samurai's fight is perfect too, really, this movie is one of greats

I saw that movie once... and, quite frankly... I LOVED IT. I especially liked the scene at the begining when Cruise gets drunk...considering I heard that Cruise actually was drunk when the scene was shot. I would have never considered it possible.
