hey, if people don't want to fight, then there's no good reason to have a war. If you're not willing to die for a cause, why are we having a war? If you're a rich law-maker, you have to ask yourself if you're willing to die for what you're fighting for. I don't think I'm expressing myself well here.
Let me try again:
If our citizens are not willing to go to war, then we shouldn't be going to war. If you have enough support, then go ahead and fight. Not having a draft keeps us from fighting a war for a minority.
If you take away people's freedoms, what are we fighting for exactly? I mean in every war we always talk about fighting for freedom. But if you have a draft, you're taking away a freedom. And we have crap like the Patriot Act that takes away our freedom in the name of preserving freedom. WTF? |

I agree with skcll. This isn't fair and it doesn't portray what our country stands for. We shouldn't have to go to war if we don't want to. Truthfully, I don't see why we have to take over Iraq after we settled the terrorist problem. I'm not saying that we should be out there at all, but I don't see why we must do everything FOR the people in Iraq.

I'm pretty sure the majority of the country stood for going to war(whether your personal view were different..well it's a democracy). As far as the draft goes I don't think too many people have to worry about that if they really do start a draft or even if you are drafted(In which case you'll probably just be part of a reserve unit).

Yeah, but the rich law-maker isn't looking at the big picture. He's probably only thinking about himself and how to make money. He isn't taking into consideration a whole country (or countries).
So...what about all the past wars we had? What if we never had the Revolutionary War? I don't think everyone back then supported being against the British, but if we never had the Revolutionary War, we'd never be America. We'd still be ruled by the British. America wouldn't be where we are today. And we'd have missed out on a lot.
I think after the government is set up in Iraq, we'll be out of there pretty fast.

This is probably one of the most unsupported wars ever, and there are many reasons not to be in favor of it. If there was ever a draft; I would seriously consider moving to another country. It is not that I want to "abandon" the people of the U.S., but I don't even think this war should've even existed.
I've talked to many people from other countries, and many believe we are egotistical war-mongers. Unfortunately this sterotype is mostly the cause of our government's actions.
Now that I think about it... Canada probably would be a good place to live; as there is little threat of ANYTHING there. Well... maybe Japan. Japan has the lowest rate of murder in the world; not to mention, since Japan is so focused on it's economy; there really isn't much fear of war.

there wasn't a draft back then. people fought through there own will. of course, if we didn't have a draft, the south would have its own government right now. wait, they had a draft too. so who knows? the last popular war, I believe, was World War II.
have you guys heard of Ron Paul? he's a congressman with a very appealling foreign policy. He's against our being the police of the world. However, he's not for flatout isolationism like the 20's (which helped make the Great Depression last).
and I don't think we should leave this country. Without us, this country isn't going to get any better. |

What an odd thing to say. I suppose that all of us countries that DIDN'T revolt against the British must be filled with rather backwards people, no? Hrmph. If Canada had decided to follow in the footsteps of its southern neighbour - and had somehow managed to succeed - it would not exist today. Our continent wouldn't be called North Amercia anymore. It would be the United States of America. They (the British) protected us in the War of 1812, and are the reason why we exist today. From my perspective (and please note that I know little about American history), the American Revolution was pointless. Sorry to revive an old topic.

| Will someone please read the bills? These are bills introduced by Democrats first of all, not Bush supporters. Second of all, this isn't a draft designed to send people to Iraq, it wants to even the playing field by making all young adults perform some service for their country. Third of all, the bill's been sitting around for a year and a half untouched, with no signs that anything's actually going to be done with it. So please don't start flipping out because someone throws out the word 'draft.' |
