As far as I look, the summary of US version ToS has few religious word.
specially,I feel that the word of "god" is removed from there.
I don't know this industry well,
but is the US game industry avoiding religious things?
Or do I care about it too much? |

Um...y'know, the US tends to shy away from overtly religious things. I don't really know why...they don't mind, say, New Age-y spiritualality, but even suggest that there's someone bigger out there than the US...like, say, God...and they seem to fly into a panic. ^^;
If the religious aspects are taken out, it's either...
1. Because it's *too* Christian...Japanese people tend to take Christian symbolism and add it in to their other stuff, which can offend some people (IE, someone being imprissioned in a crystal cross...in Japan, (from what I know--I'm no expert) a cross simply means someone who's innocent being punished...or something of that nature...but here in the US a cross generally refers to Christianity or Christ in some way, and it could offend people--"Are you saying she's as good as Jesus?", or something along that line)
2. Because it's just too religious. *shrugs* Which may or may not be a factor anymore...I mean, The Passion of the Christ DID do very well here in the US. ^^; _________________

It's very hard to really explain since the explanation goes all the way back to the constitution and elaborates on many social uproar's in the last century. Basically you'd just have to live here to understand.
Personally it annoys the **** out of me. At least in rpgs because some of my favorite rpg stories have had strong religious involvement(meaning they were a big part of plot and mystery in the game's story). Off the top of my head FFT and grandia 2 come to mind _________________ "All I want is what any man would want, a drink, a woman and a bit of gambling not necessarily in any given order" - Son of Battles: Mat Cauthon |

Thank you for a polite opinion.
Possibly,
since one character has the clothes which a big cross is drawn
on,
Tales of destiny(not eternia) may be not remade.
Moreover,his name is Judas!!(lol) |

Religious allusions have always been a part of literature, I don't understand why they choose to omit them when games are localized. I guess, less often now, but our society is too politically correct. Just about anything is bound to offend people. I personally belong to my own one-man sect (sect not cult. There's a difference) so I am no offended by references to Christianity, Judiasm, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. In my own writings, I often have characters that take the role of dieties whether from Classical Mythology or some of my own creation. I personally prefer mythological references in my games because they allow a more fantastic setting. _________________

Try playing Xenogears/saga one of these days. Those have some of the largest religious and christian references I've ever seen in an RPG.
Personally, I don't see why they've ben cut out in recent RPGs. La Pucelle had a lot of crosses edited out, despite the characters being a part of at least two different churches. Yeah, there are a lot of hypersensitive people out there who seem to be out to get video game companies, but honestly it shouldn't be that big a deal. _________________ "Our weapons are status, scheming, and playing dirty!" The Tales series (and a lot of other RPGs) usually has a lot of references to a god and a church. I personally don't mind anything, as long as it isn't mocking or deriding any religion.

Recently, the US has mostly been "shying away" from Christianity. They accept New Age (which, btw, is a religion) and "people-are-god" followings, and even some monotheistic religions like Islam, but whenever anyone mentions anything about Christianity they immediately repress it. ^^0 THAT really annoys me. |

Yeah, it kinda bothers me to. I understand how it could offend some people, but I sometimes almost feels like Christianity isn't placed on equal footing with other religions for the sake of political correctness...which just....bothers me. _________________

It's religious "affirmative action" -.-; (I hate all affirmative action, no matter which end of it I'm on.)

That's a theory on why ToD2 wasn't translated that I haven't heard before. I don't think that was a deciding factor though. Judas's crosses didn't even register in my mind (then again, La Pucelle's crosses probably wouldn't have either). I noticed his name, probably because his name actually has significance to his character, unlike a lot of videogame names that go back to religion/mythology. I think there was a minor character in ToD who had a name from Christianity, but it was mistranslated. I don't know if that was deliberate, or if the translators didn't notice what the name was supposed to be.
In the Japanese version of ToD, do you know what the name of the diety is? Is it a goddess named Atamoni? Or is it just "God" and Atamoni is the name of the followers? _________________

hmm...with xenogears I found I disliked the combat system and I got bored out before I even got to the story(which is probably a shame). So I've been shying away from xenosaga. I do plan on picking it up though since I'm currently addicted to valkyrie profile and ToS and SO3 coming up soon I won't get around to it till later in the fall sometime.
Which is good since I like to wait until games are at bargain price before buying them. Of course the exception is with games I know I'll love and want to talk to people about. In the case of xenosage I'll wait until the second one is gonna come out and then get the first. That way if I love the first I can run out and get the second at a discount but personally I just don't like to wait if I know there is already a sequal directly following the story(which is what I did with .hack and it was great playing through all 4 in a row with only spending about as much as 2 games). Which is sortof why I'm really glad I didn't get into the wheel of time series until a couple years ago or else I'd really be going nuts about how long it's been dragging on like a lot of the fans are. _________________ "All I want is what any man would want, a drink, a woman and a bit of gambling not necessarily in any given order" - Son of Battles: Mat Cauthon |

I thought Xenogears was riding on the popularity of Evangelion. The idea was fresh and unique when FFT was released, but now religious elements are rather hackneyed. It seems like a lot of games throws in gods and churches for the sake of shock-value or because it's in fashion. Sometimes it fits a game's story like Vagrant Story, other times it just comes out of the blue like in Suikoden III. If there's a religion or god in a game, 90% of the time, it has some dark, horrible secret. _________________

Xenogears and Evangelion were being released around the same time in the US (I don't know about the japanese release dates), so I'm not sure if the Eva or Xeno bandwagon had enough time to gather steam to really influence fandom from each other. Then again, I didn't really like Evangelion (sacriliege, I know. I await the angry mob) so I wouldn't know or care either way.
I do, though, doubt that SquareSoft had too much interest in anime fandom in America to really care what was popular. Otherwise, they'd have used Xenogears' anime cutscenes (few as they were) as a selling point, which I don't recall them doing. _________________ "Our weapons are status, scheming, and playing dirty!" Evangelion first aired in '95, then ADV brought it over in '96. Xenogears was released in Japan and the US in '98. The only reason I got Xenogears for Christmas that year was because a fellow Evangelion fan on the internet told me how similar Xenogears was to Eva. Now I've grown tired of Eva and I don't like it anymore. _________________
