It's out today!

This is a fan-created total conversion project 8 years in the making, to bring the classic Baldur's Gate to the Electron Engine. This brings with it the greatly updated graphics and gameplay of Neverwinter Nights 2, along with the D&D 3.5 Edition ruleset as implemented in NWN2. It is essentially a massive mod for NWN2, converting everything from the original Baldur's Gate in faithful and complete detail, to be played as a full campaign for NWN2.

This remake features the entire content of Baldur's Gate 1, plus its Tales of the Sword Coast expansion and other content that had been dummied from the original game (basically everything in the Unfinished Business BG mod). This does not include any of the newly added stuff from the Enhanced Edition, nor any of the other mods for the original game (the only notable ones being DSotSC and BG1NPC, so not a big loss). Some additional new content has been scripted, mostly aesthetic, and character stats and classes have been altered to fit the mechanics of D&D 3.5e.

Only NWN2 and its Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir expansions need to be installed. The original BG is not needed, and the dialogue files/music/movies/scripts are part of the download contents. Other mods that alter the core functionality of NWN2 are pre-included, and an empty Override folder is needed for BGR to avoid conflicts with existing mods.

Baldur's Gate Reloaded is fully complete, tested, and playable, though bugs are still possible and expected since this is a massive project. Support will be provided and patches will be made if any major issues are discovered. But these should be few, and it has been tested thoroughly through its closed beta phases.

The entire remake can be found on the Neverwinter Nexus as a six-part download hosted on the Bioware Nexus:

Note that this does not include Baldur's Gate 2, and the development team for BGR has no intention to do a similar total conversion project for this sequel. A similar but unrelated project is already underway for converting BG2 to the Eclipse Engine (Dragon Age Origins), which already released to the public its first module encompassing the entire first chapter of the game, Irenicus's Dungeon. This ongoing project, named Baldur's Gate II Redux, can be found here:

Similarly, a fully complete remake for the original Icewind Dale is already available for NWN2. This does not include the two expansions, and the team in charge of this game chose not to continue with adding the expansion content. This is found here:
http://neverwinter.nexusmods.com/mods/31
(This is the most updated version of the IWD mod. The one on the Vault is not updated due to file size limitations on that site.)

I am not a member of any of these development teams. I am just doing my part to spread the news, since I know there are some good fans of the old Infinity Engine games here. Even if you don't think Baldur's Gate is the best thing ever, it's still a good experience to play through the game with graphics that are passable in this day and age, since the original game is very much unplayable without mods these days. If some of you never liked the story, this remake won't really do much for you since it's faithful to the original, but this version will still give you a different experience. If you have NWN2 on hand, just give it a try and relive the nostalgia. It's what the Enhanced Edition should have been!

Never thought this would get finished, damn impressive, and it has to rank up there with the most ambitious projects I've seen in ten years of following the NWN modding scene! I don't think NWN2's mechanics are generally as good as BG's, but as a fairly experienced modder, I'm interested to see what they've made of it.

It's really not Baldur's Gate if I don't have the option to drop all the **** Bioware NPCs immediately and create my own disgustingly munchkinised party, though. Have they included the SoZ party creator?

It looks like the party creator is not included, and it's because the devs want people to actually make use of the NPCs. They say it is easy enough for someone to tinker with the toolset and enable it, but I don't agree with this design choice of theirs. Anyway, fully customized party creation is more of a thing for Icewind Dale and SoZ since they were designed with that in mind.
