So, are you saying if a company releasing a game/movie/tv show and does a very directly, highly-unaltered translation for the US released, it's not a "localization"? |
If it's a literal translation, one that is 'direct' and 'unaltered' then no I wouldn't. It would most likely sound weird in the language it's been translated into and anything that is culture specific would fly over most peoples head in the language it's been translated into.
For more information regarding localization versus translation, please do a google search. I'll start you off with this link but there is many more to be found using google or your favourite search engine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_localisation
For even more information, you might want to try asking some professional translators such as those of 8-4 (such as https://twitter.com/johntv) who have much more experience than anyone in this thread and who have personally worked on the Tales titles themselves. You may google around for other professional translators if you are not satisfied with this information.
Thank you and come again |

Precisely why neither of your two options (before your loledit removed them) qualify and the only correct answer is 4kids. _________________

Some comments:
1. Commie subs have used crunchyroll subs before (infact they have done that quite a number of times)
2. Crunchyroll knows their audience and fansub fans are particularly annoying. Most of them don't know what the honorifics mean or when to use them but they want them anyway because they are 'purists'. Crunchyroll just knows they rely on those purists to keep their site up and therefore caters to their needs.
3. what Commiesubs/coalguys do is a form of localization but many times, it's very poor localization. The amount of swearing is evident of that, their style of localization is more using swearing and adult style humour when possible.
Yes that is a style of localization though I personally consider it a poor style and is thus why I don't use commie subs (or coalguys) much. They are the groups I thought of when I mentioned above that some fansub groups 'try' to localize their subs.
4. The most annoying part of that bloody comparison pic you linked is Doki/Eclipse
so tl;dr: Crunchyroll knows their audience, Commie and co prefers to localize via adult humour though it's still a localization regardless of quality
edit: That pic was so big, I missed 4kids (thanks above person )
Yes, theirs is a full localization, though 4kids tend to take things extremely to remove all Japanese references (jelly filled donut!) which is why I dislike them but that is a full out localization no matter what you think about the quality.

Personally I would love to see 4kids as the new permanent licensor for the Tales of series outside Japan.
The explosion of sh*t would be well worth the sacrifice of destroying a great game.

So, they are smart business men that know how to successfully market a product to their target audience.
They know if they don't put out exactly what they want they will turn to illegal fansubs, so they strive to please their "insane demands". As a result, business is booming. _________________ Currently playing: テイルズオブエクシリア |

Fixed that for you. That however is more unique to a small company like them as opposed to a big company like Namco who has no obligation to bring games like this outside of Japan |

I think the main reason I'd love to see a 4kids localization of a Tales of game is to see people defend it.
There would still be tons of "just be glad you're getting it" and "stop being entitled".
You know they would, too. _________________ Currently playing: テイルズオブエクシリア |

What? It's not a direct translation?
I said they try to localize it which makes it a localization but a poor one.
Emphasis on try, they don't 'try' to do direct translations of any sorts. Anyone who disagrees with them, they just call **** (slur word for homosexuals) or something like that (not checked them in years so I assume its still that way) |

You have to give them some credit, they made Fighting Foodons actually watchable. Plus the intro song is way more catchy than the original. _________________

It really sounds like you just attach to the group mentality of jeering certain sub groups without good reason and pick at things you've heard from other people. Not to make a big deal out of it but fansub wars are just vehemently stupid. _________________
