Have you played Nocturne? I'm only asking because it's cheaper than both and one of the best SMT games, so if you're really struggling for cash, you can get a game that will keep you occupied way, way longer for like 20 bucks and has superior gameplay.
Back to your original question. SH is good. It's pretty easy to get into if you're new to SMT, and it has a good story and characters. IV will probably be lighter on dialogue, because mainline doesn't really focus on that. It will probably be the longer game, and has almost double the amount of demons SH has. You can't go wrong either way, but if I had to choose between just SH and IV, I'd probably get IV.
Also Nocturne + IV will be in Fire Emblem X SMT while SH probably won't if that influences your decision a bit.

I totally wasn't expecting to buy this, but that IV thing got me hyped for some SMT. When can I get the Street Pass thing working? And what does it include? I just started the game, but I don't expect to get very far since I'm in the last temple for Guacamelee! on Vita.

Beat it.
Pretty good game. It's not one of my top favorites(Nocturne, P4, DeSu2), but it's still really good. Out of the "classic-style" Megaten games I've played, it was probably the best.
Just wish it were longer. I can't help walking away thinking of it as just an appetizer for IV.
Though it does have my new favorite MegaTen girl, Hitomi, which gives SH it's own special place in my <3.

I think I've gone and made a terrible mistake while still playing this; I started up Fire Emblem: Awakening to see how it is. And now, I want to go on playing it over Soul Hackers. I feel awful for this, but it is just too good to stop.

Wow, people weren't kidding when they said that this game is buggy. I've turned off attack display, will that help? I wish you could save anywhere without devoting two blocks of memory from your gunslate. Yes, I made up that name because it's much better than calling it gun-type PC or COMP.
