Does anyone else feel like the battle system in Vesperia took a step back when compared to Tales of the Abyss? Vesperia does have a lot of secret arte properties, but I feel the field of fonon changes in Abyss were better than the altered artes in Vesperia. I also feel that the skills were better overall in Abyss, though there was more variety in Vesperia. Any thoughts?

FoF are a unique mechanic in that they work and quite well if you're good with placement but that's where it runs short for me. Anytime I use an FoF altered arte it only serves to reminds me I can't actually learn that arte after using it a number times. And as in Vesperia, after equipping the right skills and using the right arte in conjunction with them you get an altered arte. That of which you can learn after a specific number of usages. I like when a gameplay mechanic actually forces me to think but honestly if you're going to do that at least allow an altered arte to be learnable.

I can't remember most AD skills for the life of me but I do recall that they were indeed useful. With Vesperia's skills, I felt they had variety yes but some were pointless. I was never really fond of how you obtained new AD skills though. Like to learn some skills you need different CC just to up specific stats for them to be learnable. Really? I felt something could've been done better there. The fact that all of Vesperia's skills were obtainable off of weapons and w/e offhand depending on the character is a good and bad thing. On one hand it gives you the option to check the skills out on each weapon to kinda get a feel for them. But the fact that they're limited to just MH and OH gear can be a pain too.

Totally half asleep typing this so I'm bound to be wrong about something or other but whatevs.

I do appreciate the way the skills were handled in Vesperia, but I feel there were some nice skills in Abyss that seem to be missing in Vesperia. For example, in Abyss, each character can have their base combo max out at 7. Vesperia does allow endless combos during over limit but I still feel like those skills could have been available in Vesperia. I also wish that Vesperia had the counter skill for each character that Abyss does. I like stopping the enemy's attack with a well timed counter.

Don't get me wrong. I love Vesperia (Raven is my favorite character in any media, except maybe Leonardo). However, I feel like I have more fun playing Abyss in general.

I'm not sure exactly what it was, but I had a very hard time sticking with one character for more than a few battles at a time in Vesperia. I was constantly switching to a different character because it didn't feel right, whereas in Abyss, I was able to get settled into a character. So Vesperia's battle system was not enjoyable to me at all, though I can't pinpoint why.

Sorry TC I don't see it. Sure FoFs were a nice touch (And I'm sure there will be another Tales game that the field itself will help in battle) but for me Vesperia fixed everything that I didn't like in Abyss.

I felt it was pretty weak for everyone in Abyss to learn the exact same skills it took away alot of their potential originality. (My only gripe with Vesperia is that Yuri gets too many good skills many I feel should be for other characters. As A PS3 player its not that bad as everyone gets some cool stuff but I hear the 360 version is much more Yuri centric) Skill learning was also not very interesting for me as stated in an earlier post.

Vesperias skill system and altered artes were really cool and got one into the habit of actually using all types of weapons. Not to mention Vesperia was much more customizable because of SP points on skills.

And lets not forget using artes alot gives them new/better abilities. Best implementation of that yet.
