I don't mean to say that the opinion isn't relevant ... I mean, I get bothered a bit when they remove references as well, but it's just overwhelming to me how often we go through this revolving door of assaulting the pronunciation of Milla or getting upset by a single letter being changed in a name when a lot of great localizations completely rename characters and make up their own new system of references for place or item names. It's slightly disappointing at times, but you'd think it was positively oppressive from the pages upon pages of discussion it spawns. _________________

thank you Lunar. I agree. While I do get upset about little things like this, it doesn't matter. The game is still gonna be great and I'm stoked.
....though I would have been 100x more upset if Milla was "Mill-uh" than the people who are upset that it's "Mee-la" lol _________________

Not too far off. Sheraton is the name of a (nice) hotel.
Also wtf Sapstrath Deepwood. That sounds like the name of an expensive hooker _________________ Gaming in 2013:

@CP: here ya go~
Last post on the subject: there was a bit of trivia behind the "K. Shal" and "I. Fan" names (and "J. Ilbert" - the "J" stands for "Jade" btw), which are also kinda getting lost with Kalakh Shal's new name, but it doesn't matter, I guess. I'll make a post about them in the translation topic one of these days, because it was kind of neat :3 _________________

And thanks Yume, you're awesome as usual. I wasn't sure if you had posted anything about them in that thread but there it is right on the most recent page. _________________

Graces had good romanizations of its locations. Why did the localization team decide to go crazy with Xillia, especially since it has references? What's the point of completely changing the names? The only names so far that are possible readings of the Japanese names are Rashugal and Rieze Maxia. /rant _________________ Icon via iconography.

So, remember how I said Namco makes pointless changes all the time?
Well, here's more pointless changes. I feel sorry for the writers that put time and effort into small details like this when a large amount of people that will play their work will be playing a version that pointlessly wastes it by removing said finer details.
That said, the voice acting sounds better than the Graces F dub for the most part, at least.

The Graces romanizations weren't much better, really. I suppose they were closer to the katakana, but I don't think they did a very good job of making the place names in Strahta sound truly French, the ones in Fendel sound truly Russian, or the ones on Fodra sound truly Greek. They kind of just did it halfway, which makes me think that any remnants were unintentional. _________________

So......what does a character with the name Deepthroat sound like? (Add that one to my list of potentially offensive names that survived localization). |

It's kinda funny that in Graces, where adaptation was actually needed, they mostly stayed the same, while here, where keeping them as-is would have done the job, they changed everything
I wonder how the French version will handle that... In the past they've reverted some of the NA changes back to the original Japanese names, but that was for character names. I kinda doubt they'll change all the place names (though they've changed place names before too, just not all of them lol). I'm still pretty sure Elize will get her "s" back though (along with gaining an accent mark on the "e").

NP =)
For future reference, every time I post something there I add it to the first page with a "new" mention and change the title's name to the day of the most recent update, so if you don't want to go through the topic (for those afraid of spoilers, for example), you can just check the first page when you see the date has changed ^^ _________________

These name changes don't really bother me since I never played the Japanese version and therefore was unfamiliar with all the references.
But I also have something to say. Maybe the location names on the Tales facebook are just for the European version. The names in the NA version may be different, like how Jude is Jyde in the German version. Plus, we don't even know if they're 100% finished with translating (or at least editing) the game, so things may still be subject to change. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the English version the same in NA and EU? If those were specific to some of the EU languages, we wouldn't have English words like "seahaven" in them. _________________

Since they're anglicizing some of the Asianish names (Il Fan->Fernmont, Kalakah Shal->Sharilton), this makes me believe they will go for Cambark for Xillia Beijing. XD
There's no way they'll use Fayzabad. _________________ Icon via iconography. |
