Like that one game with that one Guy who had girl phobia as a result of being buried under a heap of dead handmaids who sacrificed themselves to protect him when he was a young child, and the whole thing was written into the script as a hilarious comic relief gimmick?
That was... questionable. _________________ SOON.

I'm unsure why you're posting this like it's a big revelation when most everyone has made the same observation over the past six years. _________________

"Hey players, Guy's fear of women is hiiiilarious!!!"
go through whole game
"It's actually because all of his maids and his sister died on top of him"
short sombre moment, that is definitely not funny
"HEY GUYS HERE'S ANOTHER HIIILARIOUS SCENE STARRING GUY's GYNOPHOBIA" _________________

I just meant in general. This isn't a thread specifically about that.
But, yeah, it's the most ****ed example of something in a Tales game that shouldn't be funny I can think of. That would be like someone making a joke about Cless being buried under a pile of dead Mints. And BETA were eating them.
Granted if we were talking about the Total Eclipse anime writers here, they'd actually go for that exact style of inappropriate comedy because they're talentless hacks, but I just want to stick with the canonical Namco stuff here. _________________ SOON.

we all realized how stupid that whole plot arc was years ago
i really can't think of any other time the series did something like that
also i love how Luke and Jade go out of their way to kick Guy into the female's bath during the swimsuit event which happens well after they know why he's so afraid of women _________________

they're trying to do him a favor
what happened in the past sucks but he has to learn how to confront it if he wants to get with women _________________ Mint-III

That's still a mean way to do it, and it's obvious they mostly did it for their own entertainment. _________________

Oh, I thought this was about the statues on top of the Lazerano Company
Anyways, I don't think Guy needed a disturbing backstory at all. They could've just made him fear women for the hell of it. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, and slivijizzisious

I wouldn't have minded the backstory if the party had just gone "Oh, sorry man." and never made fun of him for it after that.
Hell, a sidequest to help properly overcome it would've been pretty boss, actually _________________

IIRC there is a sidequest that helps him do just that. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, and slivijizzisious

lol, assuming this is true (and it's a crappy thing for Luke and Jade to do regardless), that makes Luke and Jade pretty dumb for thinking exposure therapy works that way. I'm scared sh*tless of spiders and should probably do something about it, but if someone tried to get me used to them by throwing a tarantula on me, nothing much would be accomplished aside from me flipping the hell out. You have to take things slowly.
But yeah, Tales of the Abyss' casts is emotionally retarded even by JRPG standards. "Even knowing about your past... if you hadn't saved Anise, I would've lost all respect for you." Thanks for offering that random nugget of information, Natalia, for absolutely no reason (seeing as Guy did overcome his deep-seated trauma to do the right thing). Akzeriuth, Guy's phobia... it seems like the only party member that wasn't treated callously was Anise, over the whole 'becoming a spy to help her parents' thing. I guess that in Abyss Land, the more guilty you are for something bad happening, the more compassion you're shown. |

Natalia offered that "nugget of information" because they'd been talking about how Guy overcame his phobia to save Anise. It was relevant and on topic because, uh, that's what the topic was.
And while I agree that it seems like a harsh thing to say--that she'd lose respect if he didn't overcome his phobia--consider that (I'm pretty sure) Guy was the closest one to Anise when she slipped, and if he hadn't worked past his fear in that moment to save her, she probably would have died. Say that you have your phobia of spiders, and you see a kid about to get into a really dangerous, potentially lethal situation. Now say there's a tarantula in between you and the kid. You're the only one near enough to grab said child, but are you going to let the little one fall/die because you can't work up the nerve to get past the spider?
It's a similar situation. Phobias are terrible and should be treated with respect, but if you let someone die because you have one, well . . . it's kind of hard to pat you on the back and say that it's all right that you let someone fall to their death.
As far as Luke and Jade shoving Guy into the girls' bath, they knew full well they were being jerks (Jade especially, since it was his idea). I wouldn't say they're "emotionally retarded," but part of the driving force beyond creating the Abyss cast was that they were all supposed to have blatant flaws, to show that they're both good and terrible people at different times, just like people in real life. That skit was an example of the latter. _________________ "I hear the voices when I'm dreaming;

Now your life's no longer empty,
Surely heaven waits for you."

| Eh, whatever. I haven't played Abyss for a long time, and don't feel like arguing with a condescending douche. |

Not... exactly sure how anyone was being a douche. It was actually pretty legitimate and a fairly good example of an extreme case. |
