Depends to max out Symphonia's I practically had to play the 8 to 10 times as in I only gained lowsy +1500 grade PER playthrough.
So 1500 grade just for a 1st completion sucks but so does the 2500 to 3000 I ended Tales of Abyss with.
Legendia I maxed out its grade shop same with every version of Tales of Phantasia that has a grade shop ie the GBA version and the 2 PSP versions of the game
For the NDX half not the Tales of Phantasia X half on the same UMD I had about 5000 or so grade to spend for a 2nd NDX playthrough though I mostly transfered over equipment/levels/job levels/recipes/gald only. |

Why are you all so fond of Arte Usage?
I can see it come in handy for maybe Symphonia, but the other games... ?

In Vesperia and Xillia they have a very tangible effect. Many of the Artes 'upgrade' and become stronger. Rita shoots more Fireballs when using Fireball, Yuri gets more hits with Brutal Fang, Milla's Round Edge becomes larger so that it's easier to combo into it. These are just a few examples I can think of off-hand but there are a lot.
I can't speak for Graces but I'm sure it has its tangible benefits as well. True, the benefits of Arte Usage are subtle but only in the sense that they aren't noticed often. The benefits they yield are worth carrying over Arte Usage.

Playtime, Titles (for costumes), GRADE, 2X Grade and see where I can go from there. Usually at that point I don't have much left over so I spend the rest on small stuff like recipes, item book, etc.

Funny, I've never used a Gade Shop before ; )
Anyway, I usually go for carrying over playtime first (and that's usually really cheap).
After that, 30 items, item and monster book progress, and then 2X GRADE if I have the chance.

Pretty much this + Double Grade when available. Experience x2/5/10 gets more and more useless since there's always way to earn lots of exp without them.

To be precise, a lot of Tales games give common bonuses when using artes a lot.
Destiny 2 allows to equip enchants, Destiny PS2, Vesperia, Hearts, Graces (not including the mastery titles, I think it fills the eleth gauge more), and the two Xillia give various boosts to all artes.
Then in some games, usually Symphonia-styled, they as already said also improve some specific artes with extensions, new effects, and such.
Some good examples of the crazyness of those arte usages from Xillia only:
- You need to use Leia's Chirisazame 4000 times to get the max number of hits (you can check Leia's artes page on the aselia wiki to get the full details). At this point of usage, it's not mentionned on aselia, but you also have the mastery of this arte at level 6 out of 7, increasing its overall critical rate, power, reducing TP cost, and other effects.
- You need to use the Link Arte Riot Glider 200 times to get total control of it. You can use the left stick to the left or the right to slightly turn in midair after 10 uses, to the top to gain speed after 20 uses, to the bottom to slow down after 40 uses. You can do 90° turns with L2 and R2 after 80 uses. The flight time more or less doubles after 180 uses. You turn faster with the left stick after 200 uses.
Honestly, it's just crazy and time consumming, so once you've done it you just don't want to do it again (thank you Xillia 2 for making me do it again). So yeah. Inherit artes usage. Always. Also, gathering all the data and checking it out isn't fun either.

As for arte uses its well worth it if you want to trigger Hi Ougi's as soon as Tales of the Abyss starts for a 2nd playthrough.
Since Fortune Ark for Tear needs all 6 songs at 50 use each and every song that isn't Nightmare is a pain in the ass to use 50 times each you may as well transfer over total uses anyways.
Total uses of Artes in any version of Phantasia that isn't the PS1/SNES version means that Cless could use all of his combo artes as soon as the game starts as well. |

Skills, Experience times 2 if not 10, Keep Gald or 2x Gald, Arte Usage so that way i can remember what moves i used b4 *coughs at Dawn of the New World*.
Titles because some ya gotta work hard for and finally if you can we need the Collector's Book, Monster Book, and of course Recipes!

Joking aside, when I replayed Symphonia (like 3+ times) While waiting for DotNW to release, I think I went for whatever I could afford each time prioritizing collectables like titles and cooking, then levels and skills (and artes, if that was available?), then exp and gald multipliers.
I've never done New Game+ for any other Tales game. (My Abyss replay was on a new system.) I've kept all my clear files for each game though so I still have the option available if and when I ever feel the need.

I'll usually prioritize titles as #1 followed usually by carrying over artes and their usage info. Stuff after that usually consists of book info, cooking, gald and sometimes XP modifiers.

As for time consuming stuff to buy that's why I always transfered over artes uses, FS Chamber levels in Abyss etc.
But I rarely by transfer over titles in any tales of game besides symphonia since most titles in tales of games don't do anything at all and most titles in Abyss aren't really worth gaining in the first place. |
