Lloyd's "I'll show you Divine Justice!" is perfectly fine within the context of the first game since he's fighting "divine beings" who claim their unwavering ideals to be just by the point he gets it.
In KoR it is way out of place and character but that's KoR so what did you expect? |
Did you even play Symphonia?
"Don't start spewing the word justice! I hate that word!" - This is an exact quote from Lloyd that is more than enough to justify how silly the translation is. It's even more silly when you think of it being the translation for Tenshou Souhazan, where the only link to the original Japanese is the word 'Divine' from 天.
And even going by your logic of divine unwavering beings or whatever, that's still a really clumsy excuse for such an atrocious piece of dialogue. _________________

the quote in Japanese is "I'll show you divine retribution!"
retribution and justice are kind of synonymous

No it's not?
He says: とどめだ!はぁぁあああっ!見せてやる!天翔蒼破斬!
Which is more like... "This is the end! Haaaah! I'll show you! Tenshou Souhazan!"
Even in English, he's not saying "I'll show you divine justice", the two lines are separated by an exclamation mark, meaning they exist separately. He's saying I'll show you in the context of...well, when someone's get's all serious and says "Grrrrr I'll show you!"
Unless you're talking about the original translation of when he says he hates the word justice. _________________

Hence why such rage at their "divine justice" makes sense.
"Divine Justice?! I'll show you Divine Justice!"
Outside of the context of the first game, it really does just become Lloyd claiming his justice is absolute, going back on everything he ever stood for as you say. One of the many reasons I hate KoR.
Interestingly, Soul Calibur Legends fixed the problem by having him say Falcon's Crest instead.
EDIT: in response to the in game quote split: that makes my theory less plausible but elsewise the quote does not make sense for the character. I feel it's better to give the character and/or translation the benefit of the doubt and assume the VA just slipped up a little. _________________ The ember is dust before the wind... |

I find it interesting that the European localization of Symphonia apparently has very different lines from the American version, even if they're both in English. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, slivijizzisious and many other names

Not really, no. It's just a bad translation of an Arte name. _________________

I have no idea, but that whole line about "you can't just take away colette's right of speech" isn't there.
Nor is that "I'll show you Divine Judgement" so exaggerated.
Note that some important scenes are not voiced in the European version. I'm not sure how that is in the American version, but I can imagine that's the scenes which are changed. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, slivijizzisious and many other names

It sounds like it's being said more there as a figure of speech and not to be taken literally as a specific reference about the American judicial system. :P
A figure of speech in no different a vein as in saying any other sort of idiom. |
But my point is that pleading the fifth is such a specific idiom that it makes no sense when divorced from its context and origin. What "fifth" is Judith supposed to be pleading?
| Quote: | | Pick the one that works better comedically: |
False dichotomy. There are dozens upon dozens of other ways, better ways, to translate the line. Just off the top of my head, "it's a secret" would have worked.
| Quote: | | Like Gentlemanly said, it's a joke. |
It isn't delivered as a joke at all. If it was supposed to be, then they failed, because "I plead the fifth" isn't a funny line at all.
| Quote: | | I find the IdolM@aster and Hatsune Miku outfits in Graces *way* more distracting in that regard because they love playing it straight with the changing music and having Sophie sing a part of the opening theme. |
I would if it was actually something that was found in-game. As it stands, all these other franchise costumes are DLC-only, which I think absolves them of any "out-of-place-ness". _________________

She didn't even say anything like "I plead the fifth" in the original Japanese. She just gave a very vague explanation for her actions. (Don't remember what exactly she said, but it was completely different from the localization.)
edit: Wait, was "I plead the fifth" used twice? _________________ Icon via iconography.

Oh Damn you Ryuuka xD
In any case, this is the reason I can't take "I plead the fifth" seriously in whatever situation: http://xkcd.com/496/ _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, slivijizzisious and many other names
