Are either of these games good? I've heard plenty of praise about Mario Kart 7, but I'm wondering if it holds up at this point after its release. I heard that it actually received patches, a first for Nintendo, and now all the exploits and glitches in it are gone?
Would it still be worth picking up at this point, or should I wait until MK8?
In the case of Mario Tennis Open, very lackluster opinions around, wondering if anybody here has played it. _________________

I've always loved Tennis and MK is only fun if you have people to play with _________________

I tried MTO with some friends and... I don't know if it was N64 Mario Tennis nostalgia or the game itself, but it played like a bullet shot underwater. I mean, yeah, it's mario tennis on a portable, but I didn't remember the gameboy color mario tennis game feeling so ******. _________________

MK7 is absolutely fantastic. I still think its the best Mario Kart. It did receive patches, and now all the major glitches are gone. It's still giving me hours of quality time a year after release.
Wish I could say the same about mario tennis. The game is really light on content. No idea why the RPG mode from the GBA game never returned. It's a cute game, but don't pay full price for it. |

They're both good Mario games -- maybe even great, if you don't compare them to previous games in the series. Personally, I like Tennis Open more than Kart 7 because it's easier to get a quick match in, especially multiplayer. If one person rage quits in an online Kart 7 race, everybody gets disconnected. Since you put a lot more time into races with several laps, it's a lot more frustrating getting hit with a disconnect, especially when you don't know which racer quit mid-race. At least with Tennis Open, you know it's the other person which means you won.
Being a one-on-one affair in Tennis Open, it's more fun to show off your equipment and costumes on your Mii. In Kart 7, there's hardly any opportunity to show off your cart.
While the lack of RPG mode is disappointing in Tennis Open, it does have a few challenge modes. Some of the challenges for the costume unlocks are really tough and it changes the gameplay. I don't recall any other modes in Kart 7 besides racing, but at least what it has is good. Oh wait, there's battle mode, but it's garbage. _________________

Mario Kart 7 is worth your money, Mario Tennis Open not so much. I mean, I would totally get MTO but not at full price. Like Charlie said, if you compare it to the previous series, then it's lacking quite a lot. I guess I agree with Britta that it lacks content, most of which is customizating your Mii character anyway. _________________ Support XSEED | Listen to Falcom music | Do life the right way

I was actually really interested in Battle Mode for MK7, now that Charlie mentions it. Anybody have opinions on that?
Also, Charlie, are there costumes for actual characters or just Miis? (I have no intention of playing as my Mii so if all the unlockables are for Miis, that's not a feature for me.) _________________

To be honest, I don't think you should get either game for $39.99. $30 is more like it... and they both are during Boxing Week. *shrug*
The costumes are for your Mii. You can only change the racket for the Nintendo characters. For Miis, you can change their racket, shoes, wristbands and shirts. They also have special full-body costumes of Nintendo characters. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to play as Birdo, Wiggler, Goomba, Petey Piranha, etc. _________________

Yeah, BB's got 'em both for 30 bucks. I'm thinking of picking up MK7...Mario Tennis Open I'm very hesitant about right now.
Sataka kind of stated my opinion in a nutshell; loved MT64, but haven't really enjoyed the series since then. The GBC game was pretty interesting though. If there isn't any progression or depth for the actual Nintendo characters, then I'm not really interested.
MK7 at least has kart customization (although not as much as the last two console titles, which is disappointing.) _________________

I enjoy MK7 for it's smooth online play. It's like the Wii version, except pretty much hacker-free.
Plus, the SNES Rainbow Road is back. _________________

As opposed to the N64 version? Were there other Rainbow Roads?
Also, is snaking still a thing? What games was that even in besides DS? _________________

There's been a Rainbow Road course in every Mario Kart since the beginning. It's pretty much expected at this point really. _________________ *Avatar by Dede/Sig by WarriorAngel01*

You can't snake in this one. And since the 3DS hasn't been hacked yet, you won't see any shenanigans like you did in MKWii and MKDS.
Pick up mario kart, and save the rest of you coins for something more worthy. |

Customization is handled better in Tennis Open, both visually and stats-wise. You unlock stuff for purchase in the Tennis Open shop and then you spend your coins so at least it feels like you have some choice in the matter. Kart 7's parts are given to you randomly. While there might be some tiny difference with your cart performance when swapping parts, it doesn't compare to your memory of the track and certainly not when items are flying.
In terms of progression, neither game really provides that for the Nintendo characters, but Tennis Open does have a lot going on for your Mii. It's satisfying when you purchase a full set for your Mii or you unlock costumes.
While both games have weight-based character classes, I feel Tennis Open has more variety to how characters handle within the same class than Kart 7's.
Other than falling off track, SNES Rainbow Road is a boring track. _________________

The only one of those I don't have is Fire Emblem, which I don't plan on getting.
But yeah, like I asked midway through this thread...Battle mode? Anybody else have opinions on that?
Also what's the whole thing about the gliders? Are they just a power-up, or are they simply a required feature of certain tracks? _________________
