St. God's Hospital is something I still giggle about when I think back on it. And the 5 minute opener is perfect.

Idiocracy is one of my top not-so-guilty guilty pleasures. It's great.

Anyway, I just got done watching Collateral after having thought I saw it for many years (I hadn't).

Great freaking flick. I love when movies set up a distinct atmosphere, and it certainly did that. I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan but he's perfect here. Probably his best movie. And Jamie Foxx plays off him well; the conversations between the two characters are really engaging.

Bonus points for guns that sound like guns, with casings hitting the floor and echoes etc etc.

9/10

Just finished watching Ratatouille and I gotta say I'm pretty impressed. The characters come across in a very interesting fashion. They did a good job of showing the movie through Remy's POV. To me the setting was different. Each shot of Paris was very well done and worked well with each scene's atmosphere.

The overall writing is what struck me the most though. From the very beginning the movie tells us Gusteau's motto: "Anyone can cook". The plot while not the most intricate thing out there really works well in accordance to that phase. It's truly not til the end of the movie that you really understand the true meaning behind that phrase. In regards to the humor I think the movie handled it properly. In it that the jokes didn't make you lose brain cells like most movies these days manage to do.

To me, the epitome of good writing is like an iceberg. What is being presented to you is within plain sight and you can go along with it, but the true beauty is what lies below. A beauty that is powerful and gives an even deeper meaning and really gets you to think. Something that this movie got me to do.

It's a terrible movie that's unintentionally hilarious because of how most of the main plot is conveyed through random voice-over infodumping rather than letting the viewer SEE actual character development because M. Night Shaqfu is a creatively bankrupt hack who tried to copy and paste the entire first season into two hours instead of coming up with an original storyline more suited for a movie format.

And it's got some girl who looks like Daenerys (with book-accurate violet eyes!) if she had actually been 13 in the TV adaptation.

Better?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

I found it to be a bit of a mixed bag. I remember first watching Fellowship of the Ring and being instantly pulled in by the amazing prologue read out by Galadriel, and although the Dwarf background was interesting to watch, it didn't intrigue me nearly as much for the rest of the tale. I don't think the next 45 minutes of dwarf banter in Bilbo's house really helped either, and my dad actually fell asleep in that part. I must admit, my eyes grew a bit heavy too.
Happy to say the film picks up after that and really turned my opinion around. Gollum's scene was just perfect, as was the appearance of the One Ring. And I'm super happy with how they handled the "pity that stayed Bilbo's hand" part.

7/10. Looking forward to the next one!

Once - 7/10

It's that one movie with Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Good movie, kinda slow, but I love their songs and their platonic friendship.

Given the bit she says in her native tongue, it was more than platonic (which makes it one of those films where the "ship" sank).

I watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Great movie. Excellent performances from all three mains, and the supporting cast also play their roles extremely well. Emma Watson is lovely, Ezra Miller again amazes as clearly one of the better young actors this generation, and Logan Lerman gets what is probably his first big/serious role. The major issues are interesting, and while some might seem very much like the "teen issues" seen time and time again, but still has the ability to surprise and be sweet and fun. I think that's what I like most, when it isn't being a bit more serious, the cast is still a fun group of teenagers doing the stupid **** we all did and thinking what we thought. A few issues is that Logan Lerman is a pretty good looking kid, I can't picture him getting bullied at the start in real life (ok fine, nuance). . And while I love the film, I can't help but feel Paul Rudd was underplayed and rushed; same with the bit about the Aunt -- a very important character (although, it is a hard subject to touch and show on film). But what's worse is I'm not to sure what instigated a resurgence/recollection of the event and what purpose it served other than just "creating drama" for the finale (and his feelings about her are nothing short of complicated). The original material was originally written as a novella by the same person who wrote and directed the film. So one thing I thought was interesting to hear was how our main character's sister was given a larger role in the film while she was only mentioned in the book.

A big plus goes to the Truth or Dare scene and Ezra Miller for being amazing in this movie.

Watched Holes the other day. I had read the book years ago but I was surprised at how close the movie was to the source material. 7.5/10

The Amazing Spider-Man
7/10

Starts off really well. I love Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy, exactly how I pictured her. Andrew Garfield is an amazing Peter Parker, but I'm not so sure he's an amazing Spider-Man. There's just something off about the latter half of the film, and I'm not too keen on the use of The Lizard either. Dr. Connors' inclusion, to me, just felt like one large plot device for Peter/His parents storyline that will no doubt continue into the sequel.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

8/10

I enjoyed how grim and dark the film was. The case that Mikael was following was quite uninteresting at first, but the drama with Lisbeth helped keep the movie together. She's a very fascinating character, and I wouldn't have minded at all if the entire movie centered around only her. Things picked up quite nicely when Lisbeth and Mikael finally meet and start working together. Very satisfying conclusion to the mystery, but the movie itself ended quite depressingly. For someone as unsociable as Lisbeth to finally hit it off with someone, only to realize that she can never be with him...

The Hunger Games.

I was pretty conflicted about Katniss. Like, I love the actress, and she acted very well, but I feel like Katniss wasn't very... genuine sometimes? Especially with a certain someone? (I know the spoilers via Wikipedia, but I still dunno if I was reading too much into it). I also feel like she bonded too suddenly with that guy who looked like Lenny Kravitz and the mentor dude?

And Peeta was a creepy mofo. Thinking about it, Lenny Kravitz guy was too.

Also it was really hard to tell what was going on because of the shaky camera and everything, at least on my crappy television.

So, yeah. I think it was a well done adaption, although I really wouldn't know since I haven't read the books. arbitrary number/10
