I don't get it, Britta made a valid point?

The only Final Fantasy games I've played are Tactics Advanced, which I enjoyed at the time (I was young when I played it, so I don't know if that opinion would hold up now), and XII, which I couldn't get into and have not finished to this day.

I could care less about this series now though.

I was under the impression that a lot of people liked XII here, or at least the gameplay, which was what made me stop playing.

the people who like it are just really vocal about it

either way, XII is not a very good representation of the series as a whole

Play II

Seriously, whenever someone says that INSTERT FF GAME HERE is the worst and it's not II, I'm always gonna say "Play II"

If you DID play II and say it's not the worst, then you would have to be absolutely **** insane. II is literally the worst RPG I've ever played

calm your tits, II wasn't THAT bad.

Yeah, I agree. Final Fantasy II was actually a pretty damn good game in all respects except gameplay. Granted, 'the game isn't fun at all' is a pretty big flaw (hence why I've never played more than an hour or so into the game), but Final Fantasy II could still be more easily salvaged than some of the series' more recent entries. Remove the awful and tedious gameplay style and replace it with a more traditional system with experience levels and experience points, and bam: you have yourself a solid NES RPG, a fun adventure with Final Fantasy's typical great music. The more recent games that come after FFX, though, kinda stink all-around and would pretty much have to be recreated from the ground-up.

And the question of my favorite Final Fantasy game is a pretty hard one to answer... my favorite generation is the PSX era of Final Fantasy games (though the Super Nintendo generation was great too), but it's hard to narrow things down to a single game. I loved Final Fantasy IV as a kid (to the point where I printed off a 50ish page walkthrough of the game in sixth grade, full of pretty screenshots and all, and would completely tune out my teachers in favor of reading it) and almost feel obligated to say it's my favorite out of some sense of loyalty, but honestly it's probably a tossup between Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII.

uhhh...not really.

the ff games that are actually great are 4 through 10, ignore FF8 and add FF1 into the lineup.

XII is actually alright, but it takes the right mindset to really enjoy the game, aka being absolutely insane and ignoring the horrid battle system to enjoy the enriching world and lore, because if there's one thing that FFXII has, it's most definitely that.

But yeah it doesn't really do the rest of the series justice overall and is not a particularly great example to judge the series by. Titles that really do define the series belong to FFIV-VII specifically, but I, IX, and X have their place too.

I dunno, I think IX is the closest thing we have to a "defining"Final Fantasy. I mean it's the one Sakaguchi himself cites as his favorite and most representative of his vision, and uses a lot of new techniques from the PSX era while representing the old very well.

then again it is my favorite ff so i am biased.

I dunno why I included IX like some non-option or something because you are absolutely right in that IX is one of the defining titles too, and probably one of the better ones as well.

As I recall, FF9 was basically made as a celebration of Final Fantasy, including all the iconic and recurring stuff and meshing together the early and then-new titles. So using FF9 as the representative of the series seems pretty reasonable.

FF5 was similarly a last hurrah for the early games (ie when it was still lighthearted, medieval and crystals).

Neither are good representations of the series. XII makes quite a controversial deviation from the series in terms of the battle system. And FFTA is a spin-off of the series.

To dismiss an entire series based off of 2 games is not wise.

Yep you're correct on that.
