I actually don't remember equipment being a huge part of the game. I mostly relied on Sphere Grid.
You played the game way more than I have, so I'll take your word for it.

i used auto battle the entire game and i beat it.
the main thing you need to know how to do in ffxiii is switch roles.

He has an annoying bs auto death thing. Certain undead enemies drop the item you need to avoid it, then you upgrade it and you're pretty game from there

why? synergist and medic are probably the only roles that aren't passable in autobattle. and even that one is only because the AI sometimes (not always) doesn't know which buffs you want first, or that you probably would like to prioritize raise or healing the leader.
you CAN beat the main story just fine "mindlessly"... people managed to beat the main story without using the crystarium. but to do it well, taking advantage of various mechanics, is interesting. did you see that video of beating the final boss in like 20 seconds? it's a cute little strategy. it mostly uses autobattle, but i wouldn't say it's mindless or boring to come up with or execute.

Yes BD, I beat the entire game with autobattle.
I don't really remember the final boss being particularly difficult, but it's been a long time since I've played the game. I can't remember having any trouble anywhere actually, and I think I would remember getting stuck.

yeah there's some fancy paradigm shifting/animation canceling/atb canceling involved as well as good timing. iirc in total he had to wait for the atb gauge to fill 2 times. i'm pretty sure that is THE fastest you can beat the final boss.

anyone can beat pretty much any ff game easily nowadays
it's how good you are at doing it

yo skythe i just mentioned on the last page that i beat the game with five stars in almost every battle and had zero trouble with the game
