Commercialised? What do you mean? Are people selling tickets to the end of the world now?

I've heard about people seriously stocking up on supplies in case something does happen (which I doubt), but I wouldn't call that "commercialised".

There are a lot of idiots capitalizing on the fear of ignorant people. They push stuff like: '"Buy X and live here and you'll be safe while everyone else is decimated!"

And 2012 was complete garbage. >.>;

While we are due a polar flip which will mostlikely affect transport and communication for up to a week, the effects will be nothing major and I doubt it will happen on the exact day specified anyway.

It's been a pretty big part of pop culture for a few years now.

As Flamfas mentioned, the most obvious is the big blockbuster diaster film 2012. Then there's also dozens and dozens of 'documentaries' (I use that term very loosely) about 2012 and the Mayan calendar.

Oh, and the Maya have been barred from entering their own sacred sites so they can be used for tourism.

Wow.

I guess it's so prevalent I haven't really paid attention to it before.
Damn.

Mayans didn't take account of leap years, so basically according to their calender, we're actually already well into 2013.

So yeah, congrats guys! You survived the Mayan apocalypse!! Get a t-shirt or something!

That's not true. Although the Mayan year is shorter than the Gregorian and doesn't account for leap years, the date of December 21 isn't derived from Mayan years but simply the total accumulation of days from the very beginning of the calendar. Thus the 21st is indeed the date when the calendar ends.

Ohhh. Okay. This makes sense.

December 21st is going to be the most annoying day on Facebook. >_>

The whole thing is getting old. I can't wait for it to pass so that people will finally just shut the hell up about it...

Disregarding all else, I swear they found more to the calendar a few months ago ;e Either way, I hope it doesn't end by fluke and coincidence, that'd suck. I hope the new doomsday after this one has a doubling time ->2000/2012 then like 2036 or something or hopefully like 2100 because that's a cool date.

The end of the world thing is not by any means a Mayan concept. It's a a modern concept and like Conn said, it's been commercialized to the point where you have so-called intellectuals (people who actually have degrees and therefore 'credibility') doing documentaries, research, and other 'scientific' findings to prove the 'end of the world.' It's really annoying.

I like to believe that the vast majority of people understand this and don't go rioting, selling everything they have, or abuse their credits in a #yolo fashion. But I would not be surprised if stupid **** does happen on that day only to further strengthen this fraudulent myth.
