Yesterday the Mayan calende has ended.
Newspapers in my country are filled with information on how the poles will switch places on that day and how that will (or will not) impact our lives.
What do you think will happen to us?
Will the poles switch? Will a new ice-age start? Will the axis of the earth tilt? Will there be a new war? Will there be a meteorite crashing on earth?
Will there be aliens that descend upon our world with technology we can't even dream of yet?
I've heard a lot of theories actually, and I'm quite interested in what you think will or will not happen. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, and slivijizzisious

FyshStyx, why on earth do you take the time to reply to my threads if you hate them so much?
You are seriously getting on my nerves. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, and slivijizzisious

Well. It's the middle of December, and cold as hell.
I guess we're getting an ice-age. _________________

One definitive thing that will happen is that sun will be in conjunct with the center of the galaxy. Which happens nearly every 26,000 years.
"The winter solstice of 2012 will occur at 11:11 GMT on of course 21-12-2012 the same day the Long Count flips over. On that morning the sun will appear to rise into the patch of sky we refer to as the galactic centre or nuclear bulge. It is the location of the super-massive black hole at the centre of rotation for the Milky Way galaxy.
In itself the appearance of the sun rising here is not a particularly unique event. The phenomena can be observed for winter solstice dates of numerous years either side of 2012. The only interesting new aspect of this year will be the sun appearing to just touch one part of the Dark Rift (Great Rift) that snakes its way along the Galactic Equator.
This is an area of the night sky considered important to Maya cosmology most notably with respect to spiritual rebirth mythologies. It will however take some two decades or so to travel completely through this dark region of the sky.
End of the World 2012
Although commonly known as the ‘Galactic Alignment’ the correct term for the event should really be the ‘Galactic Conjunction’. Astronomical alignments refer to three celestial objects in shared orientation. Astronomical Conjunction is an alignment of two cosmic objects or bodies as seen from the Earths perspective.
It is true that this will be the first time in almost 26,000 years that the Sun will appear to connect with part of the Dark Rift. It is also fair to say that this lacks the excitement of some of the false theories regarding 2012 astronomy events. We can not say that the Sun will be perfectly aligned with the galactic centre or with the middle of the Dark rift. It is rather just somewhere between the two regions of the sky. Interesting yes, but not what I would exactly call dramatic or exciting to see."

Nothing will happen.
I was really hoping there would be interesting riots and happenings from crazed people expecting an end of the world, but even that doesn't seem likely. The hype has died down, at least in my area.
If the Newtown thing was anything stemming from Dec 21, I completely take back what I said though. That's not what I was looking forward to. _________________

Wasn't the remaining Mayan calendar recently discovered in some ruins or I am remembering things wrong? _________________ Icon via iconography. |

Seeing as, according to the Mayan calender system, we're already well into 2013, nothing is going to happen. Because nothing already did happen. _________________

People in China have been imprisoned because they've been "causing mass-hysteria about the end of the world".

I did not know that. I did hear reports about the poles switching every few thousand years because of tectonic activity (north becomes south and viceversa). It shouldn't impact our daily lives beyond satellites malfunctioning and your compass suddenly pointing in the opposite direction though. _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, and slivijizzisious

Really?
Any idea on the precise date we're on according to the Mayans? _________________ Also known as Sliv, Slivvie, Quilvius, Slivendiferious, and slivijizzisious

I suck at explanations so here:
"Reversals are the rule, not the exception. Earth has settled in the last 20 million years into a pattern of a pole reversal about every 200,000 to 300,000 years, although it has been more than twice that long since the last reversal. A reversal happens over hundreds or thousands of years, and it is not exactly a clean back flip. Magnetic fields morph and push and pull at one another, with multiple poles emerging at odd latitudes throughout the process. Scientists estimate reversals have happened at least hundreds of times over the past three billion years. And while reversals have happened more frequently in "recent" years, when dinosaurs walked Earth a reversal was more likely to happen only about every one million years." _________________

Nothing will happen. The Maya don't even ascribe any doomsday event to the 21st; they see it as the beginning of a new cycle and cause for celebration (like a New Year's party to end all New Year's parties). The only change they predicted was perhaps a subconscious shift in human consciousness.
The whole 2012 phenomenon seriously gets on my nerves, especially how commercialised it's become. _________________
