so, when you attack the Iselia Human ranch (when the tree goes out of control).

After you beat Forcystus, i always had Colette in my party, so she does her trip and shuts that thing off.

So I wondered, if Colette is not in the party, what happens to shut the thing off?

Presea usually does it for me...when they decide they don't know how to turn it off she just smashes it with her axe.

Zelos did it for me once, and then when Lloyd asked him how he knew how to do that, he dodged the question, ha ha.

I thought at first it was affection-related, similar to the conversation with Forcystus before the fight, but I've had characters with lower affection turn it off before, so I'm not certain how the game determines who does it. It could be it's just a hard-coded list: if Colette is in the party, she does it; if Kratos is there, he'll do it...etc., but I'm not sure.

I wonder if there's an option where Raine does it... But then you'd need a party of Lloyd, Raine, Genis and Regal. See who turns it off then.

It's usually Zelos for me though, even with Kratos in the party iirc.

I was fairly certain it wasn't affection-related because I virtually always take both Zelos and Kratos and usually Kratos is the one who turns off the machine, despite the fact that he's not always on top in terms of affection. I think the only time I saw Zelos do it was when I booted Kratos from the team.

But...my memory could be wrong.

Yeah, Sheena can't stop the machine because she's not there. I've never personally seen Regal or Genis do it (or Raine, for that matter, personally), but I could always try bumping people up in affection and see if that has any effect at all...

Surprisingly, I only played this part of the game the day before yesterday. Zelos is currently my highest character in terms of affection and he was also the one to turn off the machine.

My party was like this: Zelos, Lloyd, Presea and Regal. (Regal is the lowest affectionate character and Presea is probably not that high either.)

It might be true, Phaelin, that Kratos will shut it off as soon as he's in the party. Actually, this is logical based on the story, as Kratos is of Cruxis and might know best, how to handle these machines. And if he's not in the party, Zelos will do it, as he's part of Cruxis as well. (He even says something along the lines that he learnt to handle these machines somewhere in case something happened. *hint* *hint*)
I may check this thing with Kratos today, as I have several save files^_^

If you have a save made before choosing your party, you could try Kratos + Zelos + Regal just as a test, and then try Regal + Presea + Genis (or Raine) and see what happens there. And maybe Colette + Kratos + Zelos... And then various other combinations as you have patience... (Of course, you have to be able to beat Forcystus with all of these different party combinations...)

For those who wanted to know, Raine can do it too. She just turns it off because she knows how to use magitechnology. I remember her doing it in one of my earlier playthroughs.

It probably goes by a list with priorities to certain characters.
Like "If (Party Member A) is in party then they'll do it. If (Party Member A) is not in party then (Party Member B). If (Party Member A) and (Party Member B) are not in party then (Party Member C)..." You get the point.
That way it doesn't matter if the others are capable of it, the one with highest priority would go anyway.
Genis and Regal most likely can't do it, which means Lloyd going with anyone+Genis+Regal would result in the third choice automatically doing it.
And obviously Sheena's out since she's not there.

I'd love to test different combinations myself since I don't believe I'd have any trouble beating Forcystus with any of those party setups, but I'm pretty positive my closest save file is right before the group goes to Tethe'alla for the first time. I could try to blow through the game really fast but I'm sure one of you guys would do it before me.
