From a cyberpunk-film noir perspective, Terminator 1 is clearly the better film. _________________

Well from that perspective, they couldn't be any more different, hence it's kinda unfair to compare. It's like arguing which Clerks movie is better by saying "in terms of not being in color, Clerks 1 wins hands down." The first Terminator not just did it with a technoir vibe ... it pretty much invented the technoir vibe. Literally.
Given the sequel takes place many years later, into the early nineties, that style was just outdated for the time and they wanted to keep it modern.
From the original movie's style, the second one fails. But in terms of being a sequel, it went way beyond the call and was so highly praised that it basically became an entity all it's own. It updated the iconic characters, had descent action and EXPALOSIONS scenes, gave Robert Patrick a role he'll never escape, and the ending just left such a sense of catharsis for those who felt it that it's perfectly understandable why many prefer the 2nd to the 1st.
Though I personally just ... love both of them. They compliment each other so well and together tell a great story that I would not dare tell someone to just jump to Judgment Day without seeing the first. Both films have iconic moments and help f***ing define Schwarzenegger.
I rather we put our efforts NOT into bickering which film is better, and just work on trying to pretend everything after Terminator 2 never happened.
.... Although, this was kinda funny.

I didn't like Chronicles... besides, apparently they weren't even cannon and did not lead up to the fourth.
Also,

And it was better for it. Not only did it mean it was able to ignore Terminator 3, but it didn't face executive meddling in building up for a separate movie, and was instead allowed its own story. _________________

The only reason I know about the Sarah Connor Chronicles is because Dorian Harewood had a small role in it.
He was in the first season of Viper. _________________

Honestly, the first movie was pretty forgettable for me; it was a typical run n' gun movie for the 80's, while the second was much more than that.
For me, it's like trying to compare Smokin' Aces to Shoot Em Up. The second one is just much better and much more quotable. _________________

This scene was the death of the Terminator franchise. _________________

Pretty good analogy for death being humorous sometimes. _________________
