I don't know what age group this is because I grew up in the 90s. So I can also recommend the older games. Ones like "Chrono Trigger" for Super Nintendo that was even re-re-released (I say it like that because it was previously re-released back in 2001) for DS. If you have a DS I really recommend that one. And the Mana games (Seiken Densetsu in Japan).

It's a wide, wide world in video games and we are barely scratching the surface.

Ever think of Tales of Symphonia?
It's for Gamecube, and as far as I know they don't sell that console anymore. You can play it on Wii provided you get a classic controller and a gamecube memory card from a shop that specialises in that sort of thing.

The battle system is 2-D, but the story can be rather enjoyable.

Chrono Trigger was amazing, but it is not like Tales of the Abyss at all.

The battle system resembles Final Fantasy, with the ATB timebars and the command selection. The story is wide open and has multiple endings, while Tales of the Abyss's story is linear and has only one ending.

Well you can try all tales of series, they are supposed to be similar to ToA.

Oh I see what you did there!
I would recommend playing the other tales games, one because they are amazing, and two just so you can get a feel for the series as a whole Smile

and I know I saw Rogue Galaxy posted somewhere. Good game if I do say so. The battle system isn't entirely like TotA, but you still get "sucked into the story", which, if I understand correctly, is what you are looking for in a game?

@Silver Halcyon: If I recall, TotA has a different ending for every character. Not the very ending, but like during the fight with Van, though I am not sure that is considered a different ending.

That's only a variation on a single scene, kind of like Symphonia and the relationship system. It doesn't impact the overall story of the game.

In Chrono Trigger, you can choose to beat the final boss practically anytime in the story. The actual ending will change depending on when you beat him. Also, you can alter the endings by choosing to complete certain sidequests (or not). Thus Chrono Trigger is much more open-ended than Tales of the Abyss, which has only one ending.
