Yeah, I think everyone knew at that point that Raine was not a virgin, except for maybe Lloyd and Colette because they're dumb like that. (I mean that in the most loving way possible!)

Just checked the game script. You're right Meowzy, Sheena knew what a "pure maiden" was because she got upset when she thought Raine implied that she wasn't "qualified" to meet the unicorn. Lloyd, Colette, and Genis were oblivious to the entire matter though.

It could be that Raine faked being "non-virgin" because she didn't want to cross the lake. But alas, we'll never know.

I definately agree, Raine always comes up with an excuse when it comes to water, even if you happen to float across. In Raine's book, it isn't gonna happen!

Well there was that pretty unexplored part of Raine's story involving the "him" she refered to when handing over the Asgard Crown to that jerk at Hakesonia Peak in exchange for Heart of Chaos.

She had an ex-boyfriend she didn't seem fond of remembering. She obviously had relations with him and could not cross for that reason.

Its in one of the sidequests...The one about getting to read the book of regeneration, I think. Raine mentions that there's no point in hanging on to things from "him".

I always thought she meant her late father, but an ex boyfriend is a possibility as well.

Not the book, but the location is the same. When you try to get Raine's Devil's arm, you have to go back to Hakonesia peak and trade Koton the...hmm...Crown of...something or other. I vaguely remember it being from some place in Sylvarant, so it's unlikely to have come from her father...though I could be mistaken there. My memory is...contrary. They actually show the crown in the scene in Triet when going through Raine's trinkets to see if she maybe picked up a key crest somewhere. And yes, I'm kind of rabidly curious about that little tidbit. Wish they'd explored it more.

I suppose Raine could have been simply attempting to avoid crossing the water - without that scene at Hakonesia, it does appear that way. With the scene though...yeah, apparently Raine isn't as straight-laced as she tries to appear. lol

Raine and Genis' past is a very incomplete passage, here is what I took out of what I read and saw and researched.

A young Raine and baby Genis were put into the other wordly gate to avoid any one following them. Sometime along the journey to the gate, Raine must have fallen into some water where her fear of water kicked in. After that, like it was said, Virgina and Kloitz went to the Ymir forest and were found by the Exire mayor. Kloitz got sick in the forest and died right about the time they got to Exire. Virgina went mad and stayed that way until Raine, Genis and Lloyd find her. She then runs off and we never see or hear from her again.

The "him" can be no one other than a boyfriend she had. It can't be her father because she metions she recieved the crown only about 5 years ago, so Kloitz is out of the picture. On a side note, at the beginning of the game, right after the Renegades attack Iselia, if you go over to Raine and Genis' house, you will see a scene where Genis says something along the lines of, "And it seemed we had finally found a place we could settle down in." Also, at the very beginning of the second disc, while everyone is yelling at the mayor, Raine runs away from the group and goes back to the house. I can't remember the dialouge here, but there has to be some sort of importance, and after what I have seen, I believe it to be the house the man perhaps left Genis and Raine to live in.

Now, when it comes to the whole "maiden" and "pure" situation, I am kind of thrown off here. There are only three options here: It could be that Raine is just trying to avoid going on the water, it could be that she is too old, an adult like she suggests, or it could be she is no longer a virgin. We know that all three of these things don't apply to Colette or Sheena, so we assume, because of the way it's said, that Raine is "unpure," BUT, we all have forgotten that Raine, just a littel earlier, performed a maiden's ritual on the stage in Asgard. Now, there are two options here: She just wanted to study the ruins and she would do anything to do that, by lying about her virginity, or she was indeed a virgin and just really would do anything to study the ruins. But let's not forget these other two little things on the side. When Raine summons the fake guariden, it speaks and says something very close to, "I've come for the girl!" basically saying she is pure. Also, if she had done it the first time, just to get close to the ruins, when you come back later, why would she do it all over again for people, if she knows she is unpure. It doesn't sound like Raine's character at all. Remember, after this scene, Raine gets her Maiden title.

Yes, it's very hard to determine what is and what isn't true. There are so many things that seem to contradict each other right after another, but this is what I believe to be true. Honestly, when I played through the first time when it came to the unicorn scene, I didn't think anything of Raine's fear of water, because she didn't show any signs of nervousness or being scared, no sweat drops and I believed she meant it when she said she was an adult, but that could just be because I was so sheltered as a child. XD

Oh yeah, I forgot about the maiden's ritual. I guess it really is just because of her fear of water. Raine you liar, you.

I'm not sure if she needs to be a virgin to perform the ritual at Asgard... The Japanese term is "miko", which means "priestess". I think they were just focused on getting a woman on the stage to summon the spirit, and she redid the dance later because they people liked it, and that's it.
I don't think she just made that up to avoid getting into the water, because she wasn't acting like in her other water-related scenes... (Besides, I doubt she'd make up that she was not a virgin and thus not qualified to go just to avoid going. There are other, simpler, less embarrassing ways to do that.)

And remember the signs above the other characters' heads when she mentions being "an adult". I think Lloyd and Genis go "?", Sheena goes "///" and Kratos "...". I think that's pretty much a hint for Raine being NO virgin.

This! Plus we all know that Raine is the kind of person who wants to research everything! So why is she not interested in an unicorn, huh?

Hmmm... So now we're back to the ex-boyfriend theory. Ah well, not like we can really prove either way.
