And H-games too if you want.

Favorites, suggestions, anti-suggestions, discussions?

I dunno, I'm interested in what everyone else has done, and maybe I want some suggestions, given that I only have to finish up a couple of paths on Kanon and then I don't know what to do (other than play Clannad again).

Not advised.

Though I guess we do have a Rance LP which is clearly about a hentai game, so, er, not expressly forbidden I suppose. Discussion may or may not be against the rules, mentions are okay if it's, well, just a mention.

That's kinda how I figured it was, and if it weren't for that LP and that one Abicion did a while ago, I wouldn't have put that there.

I've only played CLANNAD. :(

Speaking of which, I should really finish that sometime soon.

OMGWTFOTL/Genuflect
Tsukihime and related material
Fate/Heaven's Feel Is The Only Route That Matters Night
Cripple VN
Umineko no Battler is Incompetent (also known as Umineko no Rage Inducer)

Umineko was the only recommendation I've ever received and well, that didn't work out well. Cripple VN and Genuflect I tried out of morbid curiosity and enjoyed both. I actually played Melty Blood before I knew what Tsukihime was, eventually got around to playing the VN. Fate I only got around to playing this year because the anime sucks and Shirou sucks and Archer sucks but it was still pretty good/I am probably gay for Type-Moon.

I'd play more VNs but by summary everything is either "some dude goes to school and meets some chick (likely diseased/troubled past) and there are some other whores there too and yeah" or "some dude meets some special chick/cyborg chick/chick who is actually not a chick but cthulhu and then they hang out for 50 hours until she's fixed/she eats him because she's cthulhu". I was going to play Clannad (even though it has the first summary) but then I guess I forgot or something idk

Also I'll suggest Tsukihime because I want to surprise you.

Long postan' (You can tell we're talking about something I'm big on since I post more than once in the thread, also I make a lot of parenthetical statements)

So I started with Clannad after getting about twenty episodes into the anime and wanting more. As I'm sure you're all aware by now, I am a hopeless Clannad fanboy, but there's probably a reason for that (that being that I just think it's so damn good). Basically if you're going to play anything from Key, it's either this or Planetarian. While the first half of the game focuses on the same guy meets girl stories (very nice guy meets girl stories btw) at least the second half is a damn good story about family and whatnot.

After that I went through a period of H-games that I won't talk about because they sucked at everything besides being H-games. Except Wanko to Kuraso does get an honorable mention for at least being somewhat touching at the very end of Mikan's path, the rest of it was unremarkable.

Then the Katawa Shoujo demo came out and I got back into games with plot. Still looking forward to that like crazy btw.

I can't remember what came next, I believe it was Princess Waltz. Which is also great (Even my sister loved it, weird). While there's some H in it, there's only 3 in a single run of the game (Though it does have one of the longest h scenes I've ever seen). It also has at least a moderately entertaining combat system and a couple of really cool characters.

After that I got a recommendation from /a/ to play Yume Miru Kusuri, which was also great. More focused on H in some routes, but still good in two out of three routes. (And I've been assured that the other route is good, I just don't like it).

After that Planetarian, which I had been told to play ages ago, then finally did and got through the whole thing in an afternoon. Good stuff, straight to the point, made me cry, all around good times, surprised there's no anime adaptation though.

And finally I'm playing Kanon now. Not as spectacular as Clannad really (Oh hey guys, EVERY girl knows the main character from the past, what a coincidence!) but it's still pretty good I'd say.

Yeah, I've heard good things about Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night, so that's probably where I'll be going after this, just not sure which first.

Well, I like Tsukihime better, you might also want to play it first since Fate/Stay Night has a much better presentation (better art, visuals/effects, voice acting etc.), depending on how much you care about that kind of stuff. Tsukihime is pretty bare bones, very simple/mediocre art, very few effects or anything to speak of, that kind of stuff.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni and Ever17.

These two VN's are the most recent I can think of that truly represent what all Visual Novels should attempt to reach. Umineko in all it's entirety (5 visual novels out, 4 translated, 3 still on its way), has a very interesting and engrossing murder mystery plot and also has great music; however, at times the plot does feel like it drags on unnecessarily, and the art isn't anything to sneeze at. Ever17 also has a complex plot that rivals Umineko, but it's much better paced, the art is a lot better, and it's more set up as a science-fictiony bishounen romance VN... but absolutely nothing liek the generic fodder that make up 90% of VNs.

Don't know if these two are up your alley, but they're two of my all time favorites so I figured I'd recommend them.

played:
Tsukihime
Narcissus
True Remembrance
Ever 17

and am currently playing Snow Sakura (naughty naughty). After playing 2 kinetic novels, I've realized that although interesting, they're not totally my thing. My favorite by far was Ever 17. Like Tamad mentioned, it's wonderfully paced. The story is excellent (especially the last route!), I'd definitely suggest it. I plan on playing Planetarian, but I have yet to get it to install correctly with the patches. Also I kind of lost the files and have been too lazy to find them.

[] Stick it in
[] Don't stick it in
[] Genuflect
[x] Complain about how most visual novels are shallowly written in that the plot and/or character direction can completely change for the rest of the game based on what you had for breakfast and no actual connected cause-and-effect variables

Hey that thing is GOLD. Plus it's got a legitimate game and plot included with the nudity.

Working through now - Umineko. I really like it so far. I'm about a few hours into episode 3.

Things I'll get around to playing... some day:
- Kanon (I think I'm like an hour in and haven't started any routes)
- Clannad (Got Kotomi and Fuko done. And got distracted)
- Ever17 (Got an hour in. And got distracted)

Things I've finished
- Planetarian ;_;
- Narcissu ;_;
- True Remembrance: Not ;_; but still really awesome.
- Random other small independent ones.

I have started Fate/Stay Night (I... honeslty started it because I loved the anime <_<;), played a tiny bit of Rance, and that's pretty much it.

I really want to go through VNs, but I get bored easily when sitting in front of it. =/

I can't play VN's because they take up far too much of my time. But if I really like one, I'll play it.

Katawa Shoujo is the only one that interests me right now.
