Let's recap.
- Morrison is quoted saying "If there is evil in this world, it belongs in the hearts of men" in the original SNES intro, and speaks the line the game itself (if I recall correctly)
- Dhaos delivers the exact Japanese passage in the Tales of Phantasia OVA
- Mint says it in ... the English dub of the OVA, for some reason
Who does the line really belong to, and, not counting that it technically never had an impact to start with since ToP's moral is a total joke, do you feel it has lost its impact through all these changes?
Also, while still on the topic of the OVA dub, I just wanted to take a moment to point out that this is Cless and this is Mint. _________________ The Best Fanart - The Best Fanclub - The Best YouTube Video - The Best Avatar/Signature Thread

I thought it originated from The Shadow.
Or at least, a variation of it. |

If we had an actual Phantasia section you can bet half the topics there would be credited to Abicion. Just saying. _________________ *Icon_Credit/Sig by Dede/Rise by Rein, many thanks*

As far as I remember, the "If there is evil in this world, it is in the heart of people" quote is used three times,
- The original one, spoken by Dhaos to Morrison&co, actually talking about Midgard [KataReki, mentioned in ToP]
- Morrison quoting it back to Cless&co [ToP intro & mid-game]
- Dhaos quoting himself and including himself in the quote, to Dio and Mel [ToP:ND]
It also gets paraphrased and expanded upon by Dhaos in the OVA while talking to Cless at the Yggdrasill and Chester in the crypt (both scenes heavily inspired by the ToP Drama, in which resident psycho Present Dhaos is actually talking with Mint; snippet upped here for reference's sake).
As for the "moral" of it, I'm not sure why anyone would be looking for one, since various people during the games, including Dhaos himself, point out rather openly that when he first said it, Dhaos was wrong
I can't speak for any other duplicata of the quote in non-Japanese media. It seems rather out of place to have Mint of all people say it, though -- especially considering how she's advocating the opposite point of view |

I did LOL heartily when Dhaos said it to Chester in the OVA, explained it to mean that Cless would turn selfish with 100% certainty and not come back to save Chester, and then Cless ended up appearing five seconds later and absolutely destroyed Dhaos like it was nothing. _________________ The Best Fanart - The Best Fanclub - The Best YouTube Video - The Best Avatar/Signature Thread

Poor Dhaos can never catch a break. _________________

That scene is actually funnier in the drama.
With the drama using the original Past-Future =/= Present timeline, this scene is happening with the insane Present Dhaos, who sounds like he's the long lost twin brother of Escaflowne's Dilandau, complete with psycho laugh and mood swings; at the moment Cless&co warp back, he was actually busy strangling Chester with his bare hands after calling him an idiot; and finally, once again due to the timeline, Dhaos actually dies, instead of just warping away like in the OVA.
Not to mention that when Cless&co warp back, they have an introduction worthy of a sentai show :
Dhaos: "Why did you come back ?!"
Cless: "To help our friend..."
Klarth: "...and..."
Arche: "...to defeat..."
Mint: "...you !"
They should have just made a direct adaptation of the drama. It'd both have been clearer and funnier. |
