Chapter 2 is two-thirds done now. I'll see if I can finish it tomorrow, though tomorrow I have a job interview, and the day after, I have a dentist appointment and I have to pick up my copy of Tales of Vesperia as well. If I successfully get the job, that means I'll likely have less time for writing, depending on when I start.

Actually, my job interview got delayed to Wednesday. So I might as well send out that chapter later.

EDIT: . .. or now. Smile Here's Chapter 2 of Guardian Angel. (Yeah, about time I gave it a title)
---
"Hmmm. . . What can I make with this?"

All the dark haired demon had to make dinner with was a carton of eggs, a loaf of bread, a block of cheese, half a bag of Skittles (which wasn't really needed), a perfectly good pack of ground beef, a salt and pepper shaker that were almost empty (and not to mention the contents were in the wrong containers), a bag of dog food (meant for Repede, not themselves), two little packets of ketchup, and a tin of mustard powder. Something could be salvaged, but the demon was hoping for something a little better than some kind of sandwich. Still, it was better than nothing.

Among the rest of the salvageable loot they found from the dumpsters and garbage cans included a Furby, three AA batteries (most likely dead), a set of pencil crayons that had been reduced to stubs, a small and empty cardboard box, some ragged towels, and lastly some soda cans, a few of which still had some fluid in them.

"Think we can make something out of this, Yuri?" the small boy's voice interrupted his thought pattern.

Yuri slowly nodded, "Yeah, although I might want to check what everyone else has anyway."

"That reminds me," the girl looked back into the bag and rummaged, "We found this earlier, and we thought you might like it." She drew out a plain, white apron with black text saying, "Don't kiss the cook".

Catching the apron tossed to him, Yuri smirked, "Thanks, now I can finally get rid of that pink frilly one."

*
"Oh no! What the last train?!" A frantic voice was blurred among the crowds of people. The owner wasn't too difficult to recognize: after all, who else had short, pink hair and green eyes? Her clothing was also sophisticated, as she wore a navy vest over a white, long sleeved shirt and a red tie, her skirt was brown, and her leather shoes went well with her knee high socks.

Running through the people, she finally emerged to the edge of the tracks, to find that indeed her ride has passed onward to its next stop.

"Oh. . . I'm going to be late, and the elder isn't going to pleased." She muttered to herself, her hands clasped at her chest.

Desperately looking back and forth, it was evident that another train wasn't coming for the next while. Everyone else had left when she noticed a hole was on the other side of the tracks, and it looked like a tunnel as well.

"I wonder if that leads to the other end of the station. . ." The woman wondered, walking to the tunnel, unaware of what was at the end.

*

With his arms at his sides and sword in one hand and a bag of goodies, Yuri was whistling as he walked down the paths. He managed to barter the ketchup for lettuce, trade the Skittles for a cantaloupe (which made for a better dessert), and exchanged the mustard powder for two carrots. In addition, he got some soap for the Furby. He had an immediate use for the soap when the water supply came in a few days (when the mortals had to give some major supplies to the demons to keep the demons from attacking them), and that priority was giving Repede a bath.

He chuckled to himself, "Poor Repede. Not fond of baths. At least he's getting better with them." Repede didn't like baths as much as any other dog, but he was more cooperative than most, unless someone other than Yuri was bathing him. Still, being able to give the dog a bath meant he was better off than almost all the demons.

For one thing, his shack had a door and glass windows. Another fact was that for beds, most demons had either a pillow, a blanket or a mattress: he was one of the lucky few to have all three. It helped that he descended from one of the richer demon families before the angels had taken over, and Yuri was doing his best to help the other demons with that inheritance. In his house lived two other demons besides himself: Karol, a young boy with a streak of mischief and a connection to a certain demons' organization, and Rita, a brilliant girl with a talent in magic--almost unheard of for demons--but was frequently teased and almost never let her wings out.

Almost all of the demons generally blamed the angels for their miserable living standards, as well as just about everything that was bad. Some were even willing (or bone-headed) enough to actually go against the angels, and nearly all of those joined the Hunting Blades, a group dedicated to fighting against the angels and making the demons a feared presence. They were also in charge of a project with its purpose of digging up an exit for the demons to get out of the undergrounds and past the restraining spell that keeps them out, although the project was taking forever, due to a lack of willing workers.

Yuri saw little point to joining the Hunting Blades' cause. While it would be good to get revenge for what the angels have done, it was painfully obvious that the angels had the overpowering upper-hand, so rebelling against them at any point would be suicide, though that didn't seem to stop the Hunting Blades. And besides. . . .

His brother (unwillingly, as the Hunting Blades occasionally forced people to join) went on one of their attacks to one of the high ranking angels, but he never returned. In fact, many from that assignment didn't come back at all, and that was years ago. As a result, Yuri had no desire to join them.

As his stroll continued down the down, his pace stopped as he heard what seemed to be a combination of a scream and a shriek, yet somehow hushed. He was tempted to ignore it and go on home when the voice came back, and it was a tad louder this time.

He couldn't ignore it, and he found himself cursing his sympathetic self, dashing to the source of the voice.

When he arrived, he wasn't noticed, so he hid among the cavern's crevices. What he saw was two other demons, Zagi (with the multi-coloured hair) and his flunky (who had multiple piercing wherever possible), who often got into trouble and were well known for frequently crying "wolf," so no one really believed them.

Their victim was a pink haired woman, and the brightness of her hair only made her easy to spot. WIthout wings of any sort, she had to be a mortal, who was among the pair's list of targets to torment. Yuri couldn't help but roll his eyes: she looked from a very well off family, and if she escaped, the demons would be in hot water with the mortals, yet again.

"Now, tell me," Zagi goaded the girl, "Where was it you were going?"

It was clear that the girl was shaking, "I-I-I was heading to the other side of the station."

"Awww, did the little girl miss her train?" The flunky faked sympathy, even she could tell. She slowly nodded.

Zagi took his blades to his hands, "Well, unless you want to be minced meat, just go back. But hey, I always could use the exercise gained from running prey, and I'm sure the meat would be put to good use."

She stepped back, "Isn't that cannibalism?!"

"You don't seem to understand: us demons have to scrounge around for anything that's edible. It doesn't matter what it is or where it came from, as long we get our fill and we last another day." An evil smirk creeped onto Zagi's face.

Yuri quickly set down his bag of food and readied himself into a battle pose with his sword in hand when the flunky shoved the girl into the wall. That was when a flash of light came.

When the light died down, Yuri couldn't believe his eyes. White wings emerged from the girl's back, seemingly like silk in texture but feathery in nature. No, she wasn't a mortal. She was an angel, and her wings were unequivocal proof of that.

She realized her wings were now exposed, "Oh no. . ." she stuttered, trailing off when Zagi started to sneer in what seemed to be delight.

"Well, well, turns out you're an angel! How lucky are we today?"

"What should we do with her?" the flunky asked all too eagerly.

Zagi assumed a thinking pose, "Ohh. . .The things we could do. .Kill her, torture her. . .Oh! I know! Ransom!"

"What should we bargain her for?"

"Hmm. . .Good question." Zagi answered as reached for the angel's collar, grabbed it, and raised her just off the ground.

"P-Please! Let me go! I won't mention this to anyone!" the angel tried to plead, but Zagi just raised one of his blades to her throat, barely touching her skin.

"Not likely, missy. Now you'll just come us!" Zagi finished with a laugh, while Yuri couldn't take it anymore. If an angel disappeared, the angels would do a full scale search of the city, including the undergrounds. And in that search, they were likely to slaughter all of the demons without hesitation. The thought of having everyone dead through the fault of two idiots was not pleasant, and Yuri knew it.

Throwing his sword's sheath into the flunky's gut, Yuri proceeded to kick him in the same place after taking his sword back, with enough force to send him into the wall. It happened so fast, and it caught Zagi's attention away from the angel, and removing the blade from the proximity of her neck.

Taking back his sword, Yuri hastily pulled an uppercut with the sheath at Zagi's head, and the recoil from the attack forced him to step back, dropping his grip on both the weapon and the angel, who landed back on the ground. She could only watch, stunned by all that was going on, her sight focused on their wings for a bit.

"What are you doing?!" Zagi demanded of Yuri.

"Saving everyone else's rear ends! What does it look like?!" Yuri shot at Zagi, ready for the latter to put up a fight.

"Why I outta. . .!" The multi haired demon grabbed his other blade and charged at Yuri.

The other demon just sighed, as when Zagi came close, he just jabbed the sword's hilt at his opponent's chin, stopping him in his tracks. And during that brief second of recoil, Yuri stepped back and fully removed his sword from its sheath,

"Azure Edge!"

The blast coming from the sword struck the other demons exactly at the center of his abdomen, and it carried him into the wall, crashing down several rocks. After the dust settled, there was no movement from the slumped form.

"Chh. ." Yuri grunted, placing his sword back in its sheath.

The angel was staring at him in amazement. He certainly had the power to back up the image his large wings made, and his was speedy too. A minute passed before his voice broke the silence,

"Do us all a favour and don't set foot here again. And forget this ever happened."

The girl didn't budge until he made his voice more imposing, "I said GO!"

That gave the angel the incentive to pick herself up and run back to where she came. After her footsteps were long gone, he sighed, taking back the bag of food, Yuri started to head back home.

*
"Hey Yuri, why were you a little late?" Karol asked him before shoving a few more cantaloupe bites into his mouth.

Yuri was removing his (new) apron at the time, "I. . .took a detour and lost track of the time." He lied, not wanting to have to tell them what actually happened and having Rita and Karol interrogate him about seeing the angel.

"Could you not shove so much food into your mouth? It's disgusting!" Rita looked at Karol with a disgusted look on her face, resuming her smaller bites.

"Rita, come on! At least I'm not chewing with my mouth open!" Karol tried to convince her to no avail.

The older girl rolled her eyes, "Right, go ahead and keep on thinking that."

After the two left the dining area, Yuri sat down on the floor himself and started eating his portion of dinner, which was a sort of salad with the ground beef cooked up. He barely started when he felt a nudge on his shoulder, and he knew who it was.

"What is it Repede?" He asked the dog, with some food still in his mouth.

"Rarf." The dog just barked, and Yuri could fully tell that it knew he was lying.

"Smart aren't you? Yeah, I ended saving somebody's butt." Yuri answered.

Repede continued to stare at Yuri intently. He really knew when Yuri was hiding something. His owner tried to ignore him, but the dog kept up the staring.

Yuri frowned, "Okay, yeah, that person was an angel, happy now?"

The dog perked its ears in interest, and lied down, wanting to hear what actually happened.

*
"Lady Estellize! Thank goodness you've come on time!," the door attendant said to the pink haired angel in front, "the elders were starting to worry you might be late."

"I just missed the train, that's all." Estellize answered, even though unbeknownst to anyone else, that was only a half-thruth.

The other angel smiled, "Anyway, your birthday ceremony is going to start soon! Come on in!"

The ceremony consisted of mainly the elders' speeches about the birthday angel, their hopes for that angel, and overall praise. A large feast followed all the talking, with the dinner sometimes lasting hours.

When all the speeches were finished, it was time to eat, but Estellize seemed to be in a thinking mood. Even though she was eating, she couldn't stop thinking about what happened earlier.

All throughout her school days, she and the other children had been taught through teachers and textbooks that the demons had been driven extinct in the city. They said that demons might exist in the other cities, but not in Vesperia. And yet, she saw numerous demons in the underground tunnels. And in such horrible living conditions too; most of them were filthy with dirty clothes (if they had any), and rarely bathed due to lack of adequate cleaning water. Many of them were very hungry and malnourished, made worse by the fact that they had scrounge for whatever they could find, and only had campfires to cook with. All of them lived in shacks, almost all except for one or two lacked doors and windows, and seemed to be made of mud, straw, or whatever sufficed.

The teachers also stressed that the demons had no concern for each other, or anyone, and would happily turn in their own kind. Yet, that demon's words, "Saving everyone else's rear ends! What does it look like?!" couldn't stop repeating in her head. True, it might only have happened for the demons' preservation, but that demon did save her.

And now Estellize was too curious to get out of that mindset. Even though he warned her to never come back, how could she pass up the opportunity to gain new knowledge? Chances like that rarely came, if at all.

Her mind already made its decision.

Being done. Cool We also learn about the demons and angels' respective origin myths, and why Rita keeps her wings hidden.
