Yesterday, did anyone else get an error to the effect of "Error contacting the database" type of thing, and why?

If curiosity killed the cat, then...*shot*

This has been mentioned, and it seems consistent; it is most likely a scheduled maintenance downtime.

Perhaps database servers being disconnected during a backup procedure or live backups using up resources and preventing some connections (ladynadiad reported that it works for her, but is extremely slow, which would be consistent with the latter theory).

Well, sometimes I do get a critcal error message, but usually it's just slow. That's been a more recent thing, in the past month or so maybe?

I would imagine it's some sort of a daily maintenence, and perhaps some days something different is done. I imagine data backups aren't done daily, but if the site uses mySQL, I know a site I used to have that had that I would get backups sent to me daily, and well I wouldn't want to imagine the daily backups for a site like this.

But even on the days I get critical errors, it's usually for a very short time, the slowness lasts longer, sometimes up to 15 minutes.

Good, it's not just me. The forums have been so much slower as of late. I'll find my computer taking a few minutes to post 1 post...

Yeah, overall the forums have at times been a bit slow, but the worst is around 3am for me. That's a good 5 minutes or more to post. And well, considering I don't go to bed until around 5am my time, get the joy of dealing with that nightly, and most nights I seem to forget to look at the clock, oops.

Though I admit, long posting times while I'm at lunch could be forum lag due to that being a peak time, the computers sucking at work, etc.

Also oddly enough, I have noticed that if you post and it lags a lot, you could actually close the window and reopen and your post is there even though it didn't appear to finish posting (that's how double posts tend to happen, clicking submit again while it's being slow)

For me overall too. Right now it's fine — I'd blame peak time traffic to Namco's servers overall that might be causing some slowed responsiveness.

Over 2 million posts, imagine the number of users ...

That's at least 3 GB for THIS forum's tables alone, and I'm calculating based on a conservative 1 KB per post, which is probably a low average.

Ah so it wasn't just me, thought it was my net connection but ruled that out when other sites (take GameFaqs for example) would load at their usual fast speed and this one dragged on for a while. Confused

I was just gonna make a post about this site being slower for me as well. Especially after I post, it takes a while to go back to the topic but it doesn't happen always.

Haha, me too. At first I was like "Wow, my connection sucks." Like now it's fine, but around midnight-ish EST, I find it gets slower.

I've had that happen almost every day for at least the past two months in the early morning.
