YEAH!

That's really all I have to say.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Very Happy The Bane Rangers will be back...unfortunately.

Ooh, love the clips, Klug. <3 Added them to the front page against your will. Wink

I'll post the next chapter this weekend--I'm actually in the process of writing Chapter 21 so I feel comfortable posting weekly again--but until then, here's a crappy skit.

And yes, the slang terms are all from the 1920's- *shot for being a history nerd*

Skit: Stephen Slang

Raven: Bleh, the beach is so boring...

Ilia: If you got in the water, you’d have fun!

Raven: No, then I’d get all wet and covered in that disgusting seaweed...

Ilia: You’re such a wet blanket, Raven.

Raven: I’m a...what?

Elsynne: I’ve...only heard Stephen say things like that.

Ilia: Ooh...I did pick that term up from him...

Raven: Stephen and his weird slang...I’m glad I haven’t started using it.

Elsynne: Same, I’m not too keen on- Ahhh!

Ilia: Not you, too!

Elsynne: Oh, great...I’ve been talking to him too much.

Raven: Or he’s been talking too much.

Ilia: Well, Raven, how long can you go before you use Stephen slang?

Raven: I don’t use his stupid slang. I try not to talk to him unless I absolutely have to.

Ilia: Heh, you’re not so tough. You’ll be using Stephen slang before you know it!

Raven: Says you! I’m not that much of a pushover.

Ilia: ...

Elsynne: ...

Raven: What? Why are you looking at me like that?

Ilia: He just used two terms in one sentence...

Elsynne: And the saddest part is, he doesn’t even realize it...

*reads skit*

Raven does "talk" to Stephen a lot...even if it is mostly arguing and yelling...on Raven's part, of course. Is Stephen used to people bad mouthing him or something? Because I would have caved Raven's face in by now...>___________>

@KlugFire: o_o You're voice is amazing! And you sound familiar...I just don't know where...

Even if Raven does talk to him, at this point in the story he's not about to admit it. Wink

Stephen isn't around during this skit but most of the time he just ignores Raven's hostility and passes it off as some kind of botched friendly affection. But Raven will get his. Smile

I updated cities in Lavinia on the first page because it's about time I stop being so damn lazy. :,) Oh and here's the next chapter, lol enjoy.

And I'm being serious when I say this one sucks. A lot.

Chapter XVII

“I haven’t been to the beach in so long! Come on, let’s go in the water!”

Ilia laughed and ran into the ocean, ignoring the stubborn frowns on Raven and Skylar’s faces. Elsynne smiled nervously, clasping her hands behind her back.

“It’s nice having at least one enthusiastic person around, I suppose,” she said, turning to Raven.

He sighed and lowered his head. “She’s annoying. I don’t know who I hate more: her, Skylar, or Stephen.”

“At least I don’t carry guns and bombs,” Skylar pointed out.

“True, but you’re still a stuck-up a-“

Ilia screamed as a massive, freezing wave crashed over her head. She pulled herself out of the water and trudged back up the beach, wringing salty water from her skirt.

“Serves you right,” Raven said, smiling triumphantly. “I was hoping something like that would happen.”

Ilia stuck out her tongue and punched him in the arm. “I’d like to see it happen to you!”

“Come on, brats,” Skylar said, tugging Ilia by the collar of her shirt. “The tide’s low so we can get in the cave.”

“Aww...we can’t have that duel now.”

“Maybe later this evening after we set up camp.”

“Yes! Good idea.”

Elsynne led the group down the beach, muttering to herself as she retraced her path along the sandy dunes. Raven noticed her stop occasionally and look out over the ocean; he wondered if she was thinking about her home.

“Are you excited about going back to Lav...whatever it’s called?”

“I suppose so, but...”

“But...?”

“I’m worried about that huge black magic crack that separates it from the rest of your known world. It’s incredibly dangerous to pass over unless you have the correct protection—what if Stephen and Felix mess something up and we-“

“Stephen might have strange methods, but I’m sure we can trust him to get the job done. Besides, he has Felix supervising. What could go wrong?” Skylar said. Although he was trying to sound reassuring, his tone was not convicing.

Raven turned to him, eyes widened with disbelief. “Do I honestly have to answer that question? With Stephen, anything can go wrong.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although Felix had been sitting quietly in the corner of the warehouse-sized workshop, he was dying to get closer to the ship to make sure Stephen was correctly installing several new controls. They had successfully managed to move the ship into one of the harbor’s shops for repairs and had been working nonstop for nearly a week since the others left. The cost to move the craft had been fairly steep, and Felix prayed that Raven would not notice that they stole more money from him before he left to cover the expenses.

“Er, Stephen?”

There was no reply, but he could hear the loud drumming of metal as a wrench fell to the floor and the dull hum of machinery at work. After a few days of working in the shop, he managed to learn Stephen’s method of repairs—if he was talking excitedly to himself, then all was well. If he cursed or threw a tool across the room, something was wrong. The latter was usually accompanied by an explosion of sorts or the crash of parts falling away from the ship.

“Stephen?”

Still no response. Felix sighed and pushed himself to his feet, carefully tiptoeing to Stephen’s side. The inventor was lying beneath the raised ship, making repairs to several parts of the propellers. Only his legs and lower torso were visible.

Felix knelt down beside him and tapped the metallic side of the ship. “Hey! Stephen!”

Stephen pushed himself out from underneath the boat, staring impatiently at the boy. His hair was even more tousled than usual and his clothing and skin were covered with traces of grime and grease.

“If you needed me, you could have just called,” he said, pushing himself into a sitting position.

Felix glared at him, clearly frustrated. “But I was trying to call you! You didn’t listen!”

“Oh! I have trouble hearing down there.”

“Er...anyway, I was wondering if you wanted to take a break to, you know, get some rest. You haven’t really stopped working since we got the boat in here,” Felix said, sounding only slightly concerned.

Stephen raised an eyebrow. “Rest? But if I stop to sleep, that’ll delay the project even more!”

“Yeah, but you need sleep! You can’t run on just coffee!”

“I have for five days now!”

“That’s what I’m worried about,” Felix said, sighing exasperatedly. “It’s not normal...eh, scratch that, you’re not normal, anyway.”

Stephen smiled and picked up the wrench he had set aside. “You don’t have to worry so much. Everything will turn out fine, just you wait and see! I just need a few more days to work and this boat will be as good as new! Or better.”

“I’d feel better if I knew you had at least a few hours worth of sleep, and maybe some decent food in your stomach.”

“I already told you, I’ll be fine. Besides, Raven and the others will be back soon. I want to have this boat done by the time they get here,” Stephen said, looking longingly at the ship. “This is one of the best projects I’ve ever worked on...”

Felix put his hand to his forehead, but did not protest. By now he knew that his words alone could not persuade Stephen to stop.

“Oh, before you go, could you get me more coffee?” Stephen asked.

More?! How many cups have you had today?!”

Stephen paused, looked at the ceiling, and counted on his fingers. “Er, I forgot. But I need more so I’ll stay awake to finish this.”

Felix groaned and got to his feet to find more coffee. He looked and saw several empty mugs beside Stephen.

“Are you taking those under the boat with you while you work?” he asked.

“Yes. Is there something wrong with that?” Stephen replied curiously.

“Uh, doesn’t grease or oil drip in there?”

“If it does, I haven’t noticed!”

Stephen’s sleep-deprived laughter was not reassuring.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Disgusting! It’s so humid in here!”

“Stop complaining or we’ll leave you outside.”

“But you need me in case the Spirit doesn’t like Skylar, right?”

Raven glowered through the dimly lit cave at Ilia’s smug face. “Peh...” he mumbled, turning away from her. Elsynne stood at the head of the group, holding out her illuminated palm. The cavern she had led them to seemed darker than Rhett’s and Evadne’s; the air was thick with stagnant, mist-laden air. For once, Raven had to agree with Ilia—the entire area felt disgusting and sticky.

“I’ll admit I’m not too fond of this place myself. Let’s hurry and meet with this Spirit,” Skylar said, stepping lightly over a few rocks strewn haphazardly through the sandy cavern.

Raven followed the two at a slower pace, running his hand along the damp walls as he tried to navigate through the darkness. Elsynne’s flickering light was barely enough for him to see—everything felt different than before.

It’s probably because this is in a different area than the other two Spirits...I guess Leander has some kind of influence over the mood here,’ he guessed, suppressing an irritated sigh. Every time he thought of how much he hated his work, he tried to remind himself of the good pay he was still receiving from Elsynne. It was worth the money; once he completed the job, he would be free to do as he pleased, and he would not be forced to take boring jobs. He could afford to live reasonably well for quite a while with the money he was making.

And all I have to do is follow this pack of idiots around and listen to their stories.

“What’s with that weird look on your face?” Ilia demanded, pointing at Raven. “I’m afraid to ask what you’re thinking about.”

“It’s none of your business,” he protested, rolling his eyes.

Ilia smiled slyly, “Ohh, I see. Heheh...”

“Oh, gods, I’m not-“

“Raven! Keep your dirty thoughts to yourself and keep walking!” Skylar reprimanded; for once, he looked serious instead of joking.

“But I’m not-“

“That’s enough for now.”

Raven bit back a string of obscenities and followed obediently. He could not understand Skylar’s attitude; one minute he seemed mocking and friendly, and the next he was tired and easily irritated. Raven decided not to press him this time, however; for once, he did not feel like starting an unnecessary argument.

He might just feel uncomfortable in here, like we all do,’ Raven decided, shrugging to himself as they traveled quietly down the damp cavern corridor.

Although the tunnel was relatively short, the journey felt unbearably long with the warm, humid air and thick scent of salt. The familiar smells reminded Raven of his boat rides to and from Libra; just thinking about the rolling ocean again made him queasy.

“Ugh, the other caves didn’t make me feel this bad,” Elsynne finally said, voicing his innermost thoughts.

“It can’t just be the air, can it?” Skylar questioned.

“I can sense this weird feel in the atmosphere...it’s not just the gross humidity,” Ilia added, running her hand through her now-tangled hair.

“What if it’s the influence of Leander?” Elsynne suddenly suggested. “Maybe he can manipulate more than just mist and water. Maybe his personality is affecting the overall feel of this cavern.”

“Then why didn’t the other two Spirits do something like that?” Raven asked. “I mean, it would seem useless for just one Spirit to do this while the others don’t.”

Elsynne paused for a moment. “I’m not completely sure myself...”

“Perhaps it’s the strength of Leander’s personality. Maybe the Spirit is just sour.”

“Don’t say stuff like that when they can hear you!” Ilia protested, looking around nervously. “I’ve seen the small stuff those Spirits can do...I don’t want to see what happens when they’re really mad, you know?”

“Don’t get so excited. If anyone’s going to get hurt, it’ll be Skylar. We can do without him,” Raven said confidently, smirking as he spoke.

Skylar shook his head. “The Spirits are wise beings, Raven. They’d remove the most expendable member of the party. Namely, you.”

“How am I expendable?! I do more than you do.”

“Oh? I’d like to see proof of that.”

Raven ignored him and followed Elsynne farther into the cave. Skylar turned to Ilia and shrugged, “I suppose I’m right.”

“Aw, Edward could be useful if he wasn’t lazy,” she replied.

“Stop calling me that! And I’m not lazy!”

“Please, can’t we get anything done without the three of you arguing about something so stupid?” Elsynne asked impatiently. “To be honest, I’m starting to get tired of it.”

Skylar inclined his head, “I’m sorry, Elsynne. I’ll try to keep Raven in line.”

Raven rolled his eyes. “You’re the one who starts everything, and you’re always trying to get the last word in-“

Elsynne suddenly spun around, her face set with an uncharacteristically harsh gaze. “Please, Raven! That’s enough.”

He recoiled, caught completely off-guard by her unexpected hostility. “Er...I-I’m sorry, Elsynne,” he said quickly.

Skylar stopped and exchanged another glance with Ilia. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard him voluntarily apologize to her like that.”

“Ooh, what could it mean?” Ilia asked teasingly.

Raven turned and shot them another glare, although he did not reply to their jibes. The last thing he wanted at the moment was to be on Elsynne’s bad side; even though she believed wholeheartedly in her religious scripture, sometimes she felt like the only sane person in the group he traveled with.

Elsynne had already begun walking into the room where the Spirit no doubt rested; the familiar, hollowed-out chamber seemed familiar to Raven now. However, in the shadows of the room he could see a shallow pool of murky ocean water.

“Looks like the water really does come in here...” Skylar mused, observing the pool. “We should hurry before the tide catches up to us.”

“How long should we wait for the Spirit?” Raven asked, walking carefully around Elsynne; she seemed to have calmed down, but he did not want to make her mad again. “They seem to enjoy taking their time.”

“Evadne was quick to appear for Stephen,” Skylar pointed out.

“That was Evadne; this Spirit is obviously different, especially if he’s using his influence to affect how people act,” Elsynne said sheepishly.

“So your outburst earlier might have been because of Leander?” Ilia questioned.

“It’s either that, or I really am tired of hearing you three argue.”

The room fell silent at Elsynne’s words. Raven could only hear the sound of water dripping into the pool, and he wondered how long it would take the Spirit to appear.

“Maybe he isn’t coming...” Ilia said after a long pause. “I want to get out of here.”

“We can’t just give up,” Skylar interjected harshly. “There’s still plenty of time.”

“We don’t have all the time in the world...” she muttered in reply.

Raven stood quietly, trying to block out Skylar and Ilia’s bickering. He noticed Elsynne watching him from the corner of his eye; she seemed to be deep in thought.

Probably the damn Messenger thing again,’ he decided, brushing a damp strand of hair out of his eyes. ‘I wish she’d give it up...

Elsynne suddenly stiffened. “Listen.”

Skylar and Ilia stopped and glanced at her strangely. “Listen to what?” Ilia asked curiously.

Raven caught on almost immediately and he smirked, pleased with his observation. “That dripping sound...it’s stopped.”

Ilia frowned. “So why is that so important?” she demanded, furrowing her brow.

Skylar put a finger to his chin, gazing thoughtfully at the pool. “It could mean the tide’s coming up, or...”

Raven could already see the faint, pale blue silhouette forming over the pool of salt water. The water had evaporated from the pool and gathered to create the figure of the Spirit above. “Leander,” he said confidently.

Elsynne took a few cautious steps backward, hiding herself in the shadows as the Spirit appeared. It took the form of a young man whose thick mane of turquoise hair surrounded stern, cold blue eyes. The man appeared to be just as angry and irritable as Raven felt at the moment; he wondered if the Spirit really was affecting their moods.

“More pact-seekers...” the Spirit murmured, narrowing his eyes. One hand was placed firmly on his side while the other held a beaten, weathered tome. “It hasn’t been long enough since I’ve seen a pack of elves and half-elves...and a Penna, how rare.”

Raven folded his arms over his chest and glared at the Spirit defiantly. “I’m a human, not an elf.”

Leander considered him for a moment and nodded pensively. “So I see. Nevertheless, you’re still a mortal, and you’re still an insect.”

“Bug?” Ilia repeated distastefully.

“That’s all mortals are. They live short lives and their deaths carry little meaning. Few, if any, mourn their passing. They are easily forgotten.” The Spirit paused and motioned towards each of them. “In turn, you will die, and no one will remember you. Like an insect.”

“This one certainly has an interesting way of thinking about life,” Raven muttered sarcastically.

“All of you seek a pact, and yet I can only read the souls of two...a pureblood and a halfblood,” Leander said.

Ilia nearly choked. “H-Halfblood?! I’m-”

“Just accept it, there’s no use trying to run from your heritage,” the Spirit interrupted impatiently, fingering a torn page of his tome. “I honestly don’t like what I see in either of you, but...”

“If you make a pact with us, you’ll be able to leave this place,” Skylar reminded him guardedly.

“True, although I have no desire to leave this cave. I don’t like mixing with the company of mortals.”

Skylar thought for a moment. “Then what about the pact I have in mind?”

Leander tilted his head to the side and grinned wickedly; the expression sent chills up Raven’s spine and he shuddered inwardly. He guessed that Leander was reading Skylar’s soul, and he wondered what he saw.

The cruel smile did not leave the Spirit’s face, even as he spoke. “I don’t like making dealings with mortals, even those of your nature. But let me hear your proposed pact.”

“I wish to protect the Heir, at whatever cost.”

“How far would you go to protect the Heir?”

Skylar’s gaze hardened. “As far as need be.”

Leander frowned. “Hm...I see. Your intentions are...quite interesting, from what I’ve seen and heard.”

Skylar shrugged and grinned, “I’m pleased that you agree with me.”

“Very well, I’ve made my decision. I will form a pact with you on one condition: that you will follow through with your promise.”

“I will do my utmost, Spirit.”

When Leander’s form dissolved, his silhouette became droplets of water that fell back and replenished the pool of water. Skylar held out his hands and a blue light materialized in his palm, illuminating the room with a dull cerulean glow. Ilia’s eyes widened and she watched the brief ceremony with interest; it was her first time seeing a pact being formed between mortal and Spirit.

When it was over, she stared at Skylar incredulously. “What was that all about?! You and Leander were talking like you knew something we don’t!”

“What did he mean, ‘someone of your nature’?” Raven demanded.

“He was referring to my elven blood,” Skylar explained effortlessly. “I’m the only one in this group who’s a pureblood elf, after all. Perhaps he took interest in the fact that I’ll live longer than any other ‘mortal’ in here.”

Raven tilted his head, confused by his excuse, but said nothing.

“Yeah, he didn’t seem to like mortals very much,” Ilia said, unable to disguise the anger in her tone. “It’s not my fault if I’m a half-elf! And it doesn’t bother me that I’m not pureblooded!”

“You’re very lucky that your half-blood isn’t an issue here,” Elsynne admitted. Raven jumped; he had forgotten she was still with them.

“What do you mean?” Ilia asked.

“Being a half-elf...wasn’t always a good thing, I’ve heard,” Skylar said. “But you should already be aware of that, Ilia.”

The girl blanched, but nodded solemnly. “Yeah...I remember. Half-elven prejudice used to be kind of bad, a long time ago.”

“We don’t have time to stand around and give history lessons,” Raven said impatiently. “But first, Skylar, I want to know what Leander was talking about. What did he see in you that you’re hiding from us?”

“Nothing. I promised that I would protect Elsynne, the Heir, at all costs.”

Ilia looked at him strangely, “Doesn’t that mean killing Raven...? The Mess-“

“Don’t start that again,” Raven warned.

“I’m sure there’s a way to protect Elsynne without having to kill him. Besides, Raven isn’t a threat to us...yet,” Skylar said.

“What do you mean, ‘yet’?” Raven demanded.

Skylar laughed and smiled good-naturedly, “I’m only kidding, Raven. You’re on our side. I wouldn’t fight you unless you threatened us.”

“Yeah, but are you on our side?”

“Of course I am. I’m protecting Elsynne, just as you are.”

Raven watched him carefully as they left Leander’s cave and traveled down the dark, humid tunnel. He had no reason not to trust Skylar—the elf had easily helped them plenty of times and had done nothing to cause distrust—but Raven still felt uncomfortable around him.

Then again, he realized that he did not trust anyone in the group; perhaps his reasons for not liking Skylar were natural. After all, Skylar was constantly teasing him, and wasn’t that reason enough not to like him?

I guess my motives for not trusting him are biased, but...I still can’t help but feel strange...

“Raven! Come on, the tide’s coming in soon!” Elsynne called, interrupting his brief reverie. Raven looked up and saw her waiting only a few paces ahead, smiling thoughtfully. If Leander’s influence had been affecting her mood, it obviously was not now.

“I’m coming,” he replied, walking faster to catch up with the others in the group. As he passed Skylar, he briefly locked eyes with the elf; he looked just as carefree as he had back in the cavern when he laughed lightheartedly.

Nonetheless, Raven still glared. ‘Just who are you, Skylar...?

I would not trust Skylar. You know, because he seems to be older than everyone else, I feel like his role in the story may be slightly similar to Kratos'. Well, if I say anymore on that it may become a spoiler.

Still, the way Leander was reading Skylar's soul, instead of Skylar saying it aloud, may him appear all the more suspicious. Skylar may be a good guy who only acts suspicious... If I could hear more elven views on the Heir and the Messenger then maybe Skylar's knowledge would become more or less suspicious. The way Skylar keeps on saying how Raven is the Messenger and how he's supposed to be their enemy makes it seem like he would have second thoughts about harming Raven.

By the way, about Tales of the Bane, did you name Christos after Khristos, I think it was the Latin word for Messiah, right? I was in social studies and we were learning about the three major religions, and after reading about where the word Christ came from I immediately thought of Christos. Do you take latin? I just decided I want to but I already signed up to take more French next year. (And Japanese isn't an option!) Okay, I think I'm starting to get off topic on this paragraph, so I'll stop talking.

You guys should've learned from Bane that I enjoy tormenting people with cliffhangers... Wink

I actually wasn't aware of the meaning of his name until my original beta pointed it out (the beta who did the editing work for the fanfiction). I think I got his name from a list somewhere and decided to use it.

And yes, I took Latin for about two and a half years (hence random Latin phrases/etc people might find in whatever I write). I had to drop it this year for several reasons, but I enjoyed it for the two years I took it at my old school.

And I love reading your predictions. Very Happy I like seeing where people think the story may be going...

And so this post isn't just a bunch of review replies: I think I may be starting that questionnaire thing before Cymbeline joins the party, since she makes a lot of little cameo appearances after the next chapter. I'll explain the questionnaire in my next post, although a majority of people reading probably already know what it is.

Thanks for the comment, Klug. And I agree with Trixie, your voice fits the character perfectly. Very Happy

Skit until the next chapter.

Skit: Preferences

Skylar: What's with you, Raven? You've been giving me the evil eye since we left the cave.

Raven: N-No, I haven't!

Ilia: Yeah, it's really creepy. It looks like you've got a piece of dirt in your eye.

Raven: Eh?!

Ilia: Your face was all screwed up!

Skylar: You need to work on your evil glare, Raven. It might come in handy one day.

Raven: What do you mean by that?! My glare isn't messed up!

Skylar: No, it's scowling and sulking that you've perfected. Evil glares, on the other hand...

Raven: I wasn't even looking at you! Leave me alone!

Skylar: See, if you want to really scare someone, you have to do...this!

Raven and Ilia: (shrink back)

Ilia: Th-That's really creepy, Skylar...

Raven: It wasn't that bad...!

Ilia: Oh, you were shivering just as much as I was, if not more.

Raven: (mumble)...always picking on me...

Skylar: Ah, good, at least I'm not out of practice. Although it shouldn't be too difficult to startle Raven, anyway. He gets scared even if Elsynne comes within a ten-foot radius.

Raven: I'm not afraid of her! I just don't want her to touch me!

Skylar: You don't like women to touch you?

Raven: I never said that!

Skylar: Hmm, maybe that rose Stephen gave him did have some significance...

Raven: (groan) It isn't what you think...!
