Any recording app can do that—Audacity is fine.

You just have to choose "What U Hear" (awful English, I know, but some sound cards/drivers use that name), "Stereo Out Mix", "Stereo Mix", or something similar in your recording settings or choice of recording device (decent programs should have an in-built recording device selector—Audacity does as a dropdown menu in the main window).

If you use the microphone or Skype or anything, make sure to change it back to Microphone once you're done, otherwise when you use the mic you'll end up recording or sending your computer sounds instead of what the mic receives.

If you're not sure which to choose, just post a list here or send it by PM and I'll tell you which one it is. Or you can just play some music and go at it by trial and error. (If you want to record stereo sound, though, don't use the Mono Mix device.)

Great. Smile What would I do without you Lao? Audacity is a pretty versatile program, isn't it? I <3 Audacity.

http://quizo.at.infoseek.co.jp/freeware/indexEn.html

The first two on that page, namely the first one.

It takes about 5-10 minutes to configure everything (and install some plugins --- I reconmend FileTools, for some of the options it has, like Move Folders and whatnot), but having one folder in XP/Vista with different tabs is a godsend. Plus the image/text preview and subfolder browsing options are great if you have a modified msstyle and can install shellstyles that have a minified task pane.

The second one is a XP clone of the Vista address bar, which has some uses (like drop-down folder browsing).

Didn't see this doing a search, so here's an application I've been using that I liked.

http://keepass.info/features.html

Has the security functions so you can either input a password each time to "unlock" the password database for use, or have a key file made up of random mouse movements + a string of characters, so hackers can't get into it --- very nice if you're one to have your passwords in a .txt file.

You can run it on a USB drive, and you can export your passwords to different formats, and even import from other formats. Also allows for groups to be made, so you don't have one huge list of them. When you create a new "entry", it automatically creates a random password that's 108 bits strong (which is a good thing).

Doesn't seem to use much of the computer resources, if you wanted it running while you're surfing on the web.

It's there. I've added your recommendation; if you have any specific comments on it, feel free to post them and I'll add them to the entry.

AlTools - All of the tools are "Smileware"; free, but with little ads of their egg logo guy. I've only used AlZip and AlFTP personally, both of them work well for their intended purposes. If you can read Korean, I'd also recommend AlYac; easily one of the best antiviruses I've ever used, and like the rest of their software, completely free.

GOMPlayer - A good free media player. It can play most videos without any additional codecs, and if one is required, it will direct you to the download of it in most cases. I also find that the ability to play broken AVI files does come in handy from time to time.

Looks like a kickass FREE icon editor. Has a lot of stuff I usually see in professional apps. Smile

Is there an IM service that can do MSN, Skype and GTalk at the same time? I'm just wondering, since I'd want to be able to open the three of these at the sime time, but it sucks out a considerable quantity of RAM keeping them all open... =/ I'd need the e-mail notifier from MSNM to be enabled, too...

Also (haven't seen it listed):
CCCP - A codec pack that incorporates a large bunch of audio and video codecs. Provides the Classic Media Player and Zune Player with it, both of which are easier to use and lighter than Windows Media Player.

Pidgin has a Skype plugin now, and GTalk uses the Jabber protocol IIRC. It can't do voice or webcam chat, though, only text.

Woah, these are some nice applications!
Great thread!
I'll contribute:

CamStudio
Screen recorder.
I really like this as a screen recorder, it's vastly better then Hypercam, and best of all? It's open source!
http://camstudio.org/

Movies13
GIF animator.
It is a GIF animator, but I mainly use it for AVI - GIF/GIF - AVI conversion
http://jansfreeware.com/jfgraphics.htm

SciTE
Source code editor
I use this for everything from HTML to C++
"available for Intel Win32 and Linux compatible operating systems with GTK+. It has been run on Windows XP and on Fedora 8 and Ubuntu 7.10 with GTK+ 2.12"
http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html

Does anyone know of any good general-purpose video capture utilities that are WDM- and/or VFW-compatible, and can output using installed DirectX codec filters? I'd like something to capture video from webcams, video capture/TV Tuner devices, etc. - my webcam's software can't do video, and my TV Tuner's stock software is ****. Thanks in advance.

@Divinus Ratio: Added. CamStudio under Media Software, Movies13 under GraphicsSoftware, SciTE under Text Editors.
