I am proud to announce that, after a few months of gathering dust in my To-Do pile, the database is now fully up-to-date with (I hope) all software that was posted in either threads with the exception of the two mentioned below.
Due to the fact that McAfee Siteadvisor has listed multiple downloads on the Free Download Manager site as containing malware or adware and that FDM is apparently detected by some anti-malware software as adware, I cannot accept it in this index.
I have also added the "no malware" criteria, which I only now noticed was lacking.
_outlaw's suggestion of GetRight is ineligible due to its status as trial software—and any suggestion to bypass that trial would be technically illegal. I also recall reading somewhere that it installed malware or adware after a certain amount of time for some users. _________________

What's going on with AVG Free?
A few months ago, they were saying there were no longer supporting the Free version of their product. Now(after I went through the hassle of finding one that actually works), it seems to be fully operational.
Wuh? |

| I don't think they're updating it any more, the old version still works. |

It's been a few months since I've heard any on it and I've never used AVG due to some problems I've heard about with the program itself, but I'm inclined to agree with jimbob's explanation. They're not updating it—I assume that means definitions too—and they possibly might no longer give any support whatsoever (if they even did offer official support with their free version). _________________

The explanation I got from a friend in the business is that AVGfree 7.5 is still being updated, but who knows for how long. There is no AVGfree 8 available at the present time.
AVG7.1, the one I liked, is no longer suported. |

I know this one that you can find at mediaconverter.com it shouldn't be illegal. You don't have to download it either, you just have to have an account with your email and they'll email whatever you converted. You can also put in youtube URLs and they'll convert them so you can put them on your ipod.
like I said, it shouldn't be illegal, but if it is then I'm totally TOTALLY sorry for typing this >.< _________________ <img> |

The service itself isn't illegal, but using it to redistribute material for which you do not have that particular right is.
However, as an internet service rather than local application, it doesn't really fit this topic's purpose, in my opinion. At the limit, some online AJAX apps like (I think) Google's word processor might, but the fact that this is more strictly a service and that most processing is actually done server-side, it isn't really appropriate.
EDIT: I've updated with Process Explorer [Utilities section], RootkitRevealer [Security → Other section)], along with a general entry pointing to the Sysinternals website [Utilities], and a little open-source utility I recently found called Launchy [Utilities]. _________________

May I suggest one, Lao?
Actually, it's sort of a suggestion, and also a question... I saw you had put Daemon Tools on there, and I also hear a lot about Alcohol...
So my question is, how do those two programs work together? Or do they both do the same things seperately? I know that long ago my rother used Alcohol to create the images, then Daemon Tools to mount them, but with new versions and programs, I'm not sure which is the best to use. Both, just Daemon, or just Alcohol?
So that's my suggestion, maybe some more information on Alcohol and maybe add it to the list. *Nod* Nice topic, Lao! |

DaemonTools and Alcohol 52% both have the same functionality: allowing to mount disc images onto a or many virtual drives, and to circumvent some DRM (not entirely illegal—I believe personal backup copies of discs are legal, after all, and some DRM will prevent running/installing some software if it even detects known virtual drive applications).
Alcohol 120% has the added functionality of being able to create images and write them to discs.
Mind, the Alcohol Soft software is commercial, while DaemonTools is freeware. If you have a full commercial burning suite (like Nero), you don't need Alcohol 120%'s image/write functionality.
And this was Fawkes' original topic, I just took over since he didn't have time to maintain it. XD _________________

Well, I know it was Fawkes' originally, but I guess I'm thanking you for maintaining it now.
And I do have Nero 7, full. (Not cracked, stolen, illegal.) I wasnt aware Nero had the capability to burn images... I'll have to mess around with the options then.
So then a good plan would be for me to use Nero to make the images and then Daemon Tools to mount them? |

Yep.
I think DaemonTools can mount .NRG images. _________________

http://www.apophysis.org/index.html

I've added Apophysis along with your comments, Conquest.
I've also added Notepad++, which is <3 (and with which I'm editing the .txt file containing the contents of this topic <<; ). It's a great little text- and code-editing app.
| Quote: | | Notepad++ is a free text and source code editor (and Notepad replacement) for Microsoft Windows. It's much more powerful than Notepad; it supports tabbed editing of multiple files, viewing two files in parallel (with synchronized or independant scrolling), various plugins, and a host of other features. As a source code editor, it supports many languages, such as Ada, Batch files (Windows), C, C++, C#, Objective-C, Java, Fortran, Haskell, PHP, HTML, CSS and SQL; you can also define your own language and syntax highlighting. |

Request, Laogeodritt!
Know of any good freeware programs that record OUTGOING sound from the computer?
I had one AGES ago but dont remember anything about it. Then preferrably this program can convert these sounds automatically into mp3, or if not, at least .wav files.
I appreciate your help in advance. |
