I'm a little puzzled at everyone's tastes here. I didn't see anything wrong with Tear's voice. She was a a soldier, and a mature woman, and her voice reflected it.
Don't you think Chloe seemed a little mature for a 17-year-old? No one seemed to have any problem with her voice, even though it's the same actress.
On the other hand, people were annoyed with Shirley's 15-year-old voice? _________________

While I personally thought that Tear's English VA was a little too dry when doing the whole emotionless soldier thing, I also thought her Japanese VA was too emotional too often and didn't really fit the soldier aspect of Tear's character well in that regard. Not that either of her VAs are bad, I just think there's a huge contrast between the two that's offsetting people's opinions a little, (that or some people just can't see past the exotic sound of the Japanese language). I actually like both voices but prefer her Japanese one slightly more in this case just because she's actually more interesting.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather get a VA who sounds a little older than his/her character than one who sounds too young. Take Shirley for example, who single-handedly dragged ToL down, almost ruining the entire game's experience until the character quests came along, and she became a mute along with everyone else. T'was the hi-lite of the game for me.
Oh Namco, please don't hire Shirley's VA for anything ever again... _________________

I certainly would approve of the Phantasia OVA cast voicing them in the games. Especially since it's Natalia's VA whom will be voicing Arche. That's double win for me!

No love for Carrie Savage on this board...
Ok, so Shirley's not among her best roles, but she's a fantastic actress in her own right. Lyon in Suikoden V, and Xing Cai & Diao Chan in Dynasty Warriors... those are just examples.
But anyway, she does VA work in Texas now. You probably won't have to worry about her voicing a Tales character again. _________________

When Shirley spoke as the Merines, her voice wasn't so annoying. It just irritated me that Shirley ended every sentence with "Senel." >.>
I believe the Shirley's VA doesn't sound that irritating all the time. _________________ The brilliant trees standing in the cool air

You're right I agree, she was not quite as annoying as the Merines, but still not generally devoid of annoyingness either. There were several okay moments from her, but it just comes down to the fact that the sound of her voice coupled with her overall bad acting are what made my ears bleed. IMHO. _________________

The main difference between Tear's voice and Chloe's voice is emotion. Chloe showed quite a bit of emotion throughout the game- from anger, panic/frightened, happiness, shock, embarassment, etc- while Tear did not.
I also thought that Chloe's voice seemed a little higher pitched than Tear's.
Don't get me wrong, I though Tear's voice was a good fit aside from the lack of emotion, but I think that's why people don't mind Chloe's voice.

That's because her voice seemed more like a shriek. Her Merines voice was actually pretty good. _________________

I wish he didn't remind me of X. Where X= a guy in any game/show/etc that you can name.

The reason people didn't like Shirley's voice was because it was totally unrealistic for a fifteen-year-old girl. It's sorta unrealistic for anyone above the age of about five to be honest... _________________

Hmm, come to think of it, a lot of American voice actresses have yet to pin down such a distinct voice. They either come off as shrieky, or too old for the character's age, which is how I personally felt about Tear's dub voice in Abyss.
You guys have to admit, that's a tough voice to nail for certain actresses. _________________

The reason why Shirley's VA says Senel after every sentence was because,of the lack of using the real word that Shirley keep saying "brother". Anyways it shouldn't matter much better in the JP version she keep saying brother after every sentence as well haha. At least she said Senal after every other time. _________________
