OK, I just got Tales of the Abyss, and I'm about four hours into the game, and I have some questions I need answered. For one thing, why are Life Bottles so expensive? They cost 1000 Gald! This is really frustrating to me because I need Life Bottles but I can't afford them, and I can't get money for them by battling because I've got no Life Bottles and my characters keep dying! Is there a way that I can make the price go down or is there an easy way for me to make money without fighting enemies?

Also, why are Fields of Fonim so scarce? It seems like they rarely appear and that every time they do, they either disappear before I can perform a tech inside them or they don't appear nearby enemies and I can't do the move. Also, if a caster casts a spell while standing in a Field of Fonim even if the target is not standing in the FOF, will the spell still make the FOF change? Or does the target have to be inside the FOF?

Am I underleveled? I'm at the place where you fight Arietta for the first time but my characters are only Level 9, but I read a guide mentioning Overlimits at this part, which are not learned until Level 15. Am I underleveled?

Thank you for taking the time to read my questions and (hopefully) answering them.

I guess you are a little underleveled...Don't remember what level I was at that point though. (I fought that battle on Hard mode and didn't have too much trouble, so I'm assuming around 20...)

Anyway, believe it or not, towns have different selling prices for items. So where you found the 1000 Gald Life Bottle may not correspond with another place's shop. If you're willing to put the extra time in, try to look for the cheapest price. Easiest way to do this is by checking the world map instead of going to the actual location.

Field of Fonims may be a little scarce right now. If you're not using a lot of magic, this becomes apparent. Most offensive magic makes a FOF, but it's incomplete. You'd need to use that offensive magic twice in a row to produce a complete one. If you have any physical elemental techs (like Jade's Tenraisou), then they will need to be used four times in order to complete a FOF circle. In some cases, it's less than four times, but I don't completely understand FOFs. As you go on in the game, FOFs become more common.

Also, only player characters have to be in the FOF in order for the FOF Change to occur. Obviously, for melee fighters it's nice to stand in a FOF up close to the enemy, but better for spellcasters to stand away from it. In fact, some enemies will even use FOF Changes on their own...

Great, thanks for your help! And if it's not too much trouble, could you explain to me what a Capacity Core is?

gamefaqs.com lists all possible C cores in game and the AD skills you can learn buy lving up with them.

As for Lving as long as you master luke/guys tech moves to use the ougis (once you can use them at LV 15.) Your party members should LV up at the same time as mastering those skills.

So at coral castle you technically could be at LV 15 and long as you fought every battle on everyscreen on every dungeon up to this point.

Btw speaking of gamefaqs that site says the monsters can stand in the FOF circles of a FOF change to happen (so your spell casters don't have to stand on the circles.

Only Water FOF changes can be done that early in game.

If this is your 1st tales game play on normal not hard mode.

As mentioned at game faq low LV spells (LV 1 spells) create very small FOF circles that don't stay on the field for long.

Also abuse free HP/TP healing spots (at the save points) and LV up nearest them.

No problem. Smile

A Capacity Core is basically a growth amplifier - as a character levels up, some stats will receive additional increments. For example, if a character has equipped a Core with +2 Phys. Atk, then he/she will receive a +2 Phys. Atk bonus every level up. The bonuses accumulate and unlock more AD Skills. 15 levels of +2 Phys. Atk will get a total of +30 Phys. Atk, which unlocks the "Efficient" AD Skill. AD Skills and Capacity Cores are very closely intertwined - you can unlock a plethora of AD Skills by choosing which stats to raise; six in total can be raised with C. Cores. It's important to raise the right stats, so don't neglect any characters!

That really helps, thanks a lot. It sounds really complicated though.... Razz

But don't all party members LV up including the 2 in the reserve slots?

So its kind of impossible to neglect party members.

However the 2 reserve party members won't LV up their skill/spell usage rates.

Also if need be gamefaqs.com has everything you could possibly want to know about this game their. The only exception is the Din's shop customizable items (since their isn't a faq/listed for those items.)

C. Cores give you added stats that will eventually lead the extra skills similiar to the EX skills in ToS except that you can have as many skills as possible at one time...

Try to limit (but not just running...) your leveling so that you can get the most out of C.Core bonuses...

But if you limit your LVing up then your lv's may be to low to win any (or most battles.)

I meant to just advance normally not too attempt to power level...
and Tales games never had the greatest stat boosts, it mostly depended on skills...but if its on normal you should be able to win easily with a few exceptions....

Powerleveling is not the greatest idea with C. Cores. By neglect, I meant by the way of C. Cores - leaving any character with only one C. Core all throughout the game isn't the best idea. You need to mix and match to get the right stat bonuses to get the best AD Skills.

I've got some more questions. Why can't characters use items on each other? For some reason, the game won't let me use items on anyone other than myself, and the same holds true for other characters. I also want to know if it's possible to switch the party around in the middle of battle. I've seen videos of people doing this but haven't figured out how to do it myself.

I THINK you can change them around by pressing triangle and then pressing L1/R1

You can't use items other than Life Bottles on other characters without the Item Throw AD Skill; a character gets it when his or her physical attack power has been raised by 40 by Capacity Cores...

Once you have the Moon Selector, you can switch characters by opening the menu and pressing Start. You get the Moon Selector at the same time you are taught to use FS Chambers...
